can anyone recommend a microscope i can use to check studs ferility myself?

The difficulty isn't taking the sample or seeing anything through the microscope, it's knowing how to interpret what you're seeing:  What % of sperm are normal; which have broken tails; which have head pieces that are deformed and so on...

Unless you are trained in semen analysis and then in interpreting the results, it is way better to get a lab to do it and receive an accurate result.

Do Idexx run semen samples?  But your best bet is to get in touch with a repro vet, because otherwise you will also need to store and transport the semen so that it arrives in good shape and not dead from transportation. 

A repro vet will have all the facilities on site to 1) take a sample (ie a teaser bitch or swabs of a bitch in estrus) 2) the skills to take a collection, know what portion of the semen to look at 3) be able to analyse it and give you meaningful results.

There are not many repro vets in the UK - where are you based?
