If I can understand all this (which I'm not sure I do) - the owner of the bitch pays for the Service and generally with a proven male, at the time of the mating.    Most breeders would give a free repeat mating with no puppies (and I would if no more than 2 live puppies at birth).

What agreements had u made with bitch owner should the mating fail ?

I think u said that u did the mating by ai .This still doesn't guarantee a pregnancy

If u are struggling to write your post can u get someone to help u ? It will make it easier for members to help.

What are the terms of your written stud contract?

I have no idea what that says or what the situation is.  I'd suggest getting someone else to post on your behalf so we can read.

Op owns a stud dog and did an AI on someone’s bitch. Bitch’s owner paid OP £250 stud fee at that time. Bitch has been scanned and isn’t pregnant and the bitch’s owner wants the stud fee back, but OP doesn’t agree, they feel the stud service was fulfilled and are offering a free return next time. Bitch’s owner is not happy about this and is harassing OP and threatening police involvement.

I don’t think anyone can really answer this because it depends on what you agreed with the bitch’s owner before the AI. What had you agreed? Always best to have this all in writing so there can’t be any grey areas.

Sounds all very shambolic to say the least, you cannot know that AI or natural service "works" until the bitch is scanned or whelps, I would give a bitch owner her money back, it's always wise to keep the stud fee until the bitch is pregnant if you don't have a written contract which I suspect the OP didn't have.

If you don't have a written contract you would have been wise to not spend the money.  Pay up and look big.  Before the law is involved.

There are lots of reasons why any mating may not take, and many of those reasons are to do with the bitch - not the stud.

Therefore I don't think the bitch owner has the right to demand anything - if there were no stud contract.  Part of what you're paying for is the "service" of the stud and the time of the stud owner, and that is the same whether or not there are any puppies.  An AI is more involved than a regular natural mating so you could say she has really earned her stud fee with that one.

However, most times a stud owner will have you sign a contract and that contract will say what happens in the event there are no puppies - for example, I usually am offered a free return on the next heat cycle.  If there were no contract, no one can demand anything of anyone else afterwards.

I'm interested to know why it was an AI and not a natural breeding though??

Sorry but I wouldn't let anyone stress me over £250....isn't it easier just to give her a refund and move on? Personally I wouldn't want my dog's puppies being raised and sold on by someone like this. Let her find someone else to hassle.

Surely the cost of a lawyer very quickly overshadows the £250?
It would seem easier, if that's the route you're taking, to just refund the money and never deal with that person again. Maybe it's the right thing to do; maybe it's the wrong thing to do, but it seems a small cost (much smaller than your lawyer) to get them out of your life and away from your stud dog/
