It has been announced today that e-collars are to be banned. Electric containment fences will still be allowed.

Long overdue. I'm not even sure about electric fencing for small animals. I wouldn't use it, but will admit to having no experience of it in practice.

Hooray- at last!    Does anyone know when this will become law?

It looks as if this isn't coming into law yet.  It's just said that the consultation period has 'concluded'.   Better English would be IS concluded.    As for 'containment fencing' - pah.  As far as I'm concerned and with my breed(s), if there's something worth chasing out there, dogs will run through, and then worry about getting back, if at all, later.   There's nothing better than a good old high enough FENCE.

Unless you have a climber!

I agree though that collar+invisible fence are a waste of time, reading reviews so many people tried and failed that. But an electric fence on its own is good, such as used for sheep etc, as there is a visible barrier that the dog knows will sting.

Haven't read the whole thing, but in description they refer to banning "the use of hand-held remote controlled e-collar devices" - does it mean that anti-bark collars that are not remotely hand-held but work off sensors, will still be allowed?

Don’t like the invisible fence things at all.
We were walking through a village with the two dogs we had then, all was peaceful and we were admiring the pretty village. Then two dogs came racing across a garden to an open gate, barking ferociously. Nearly jumped out of my skin, my next thought was that would come across the road and have a go at my dogs. When they didn’t I began to realise that it was an invisible fence especially as they both were wearing collars with small black boxes.
It didn’t do much for my nerves and the continuous ferocious barking and the sight of the dogs scared my two dogs witless and all because someone couldn’t be bothered to shut the gate each time someone went out in the car.

Ok now read the summary and they don't differentiate at all between collars that give electric shock, collars that issue a spray, and collars that issue a noise. Are they all to be banned?

And they definitely only talking about collars that are remotely operated, meaning the anti-bark collars that are activated by sensors and give electric shock, spray or noise would still be allowed...
