For me, selling my precious babies was probably the worst part of doing a litter, which we only did for our next generation, so with an average litter of 8 puppies, keeping perhaps 2, that still meant finding decent lasting homes for the remainder extremely difficult. I seemed to have more trouble finding that, back in the UK than in Canada. For some reason. Most of those who had our puppies, out there, became our friends - not all, but most.
People need to know that even if only a couple of the puppies in a litter (if lucky!) will become show dogs, the vast majority will just be pets but the pets will have benefitted from the time and effort good breeders put into the litters they do have. Incidentally all our show hounds, were our PETS first!
All you can do is go with your gut feeling about people, how they come across when first enquiring, and how they inter-act with you and your puppies when they visit. It usually worked with me, except for a few noteable exceptions, the worst involving 2 I sold to a fellow-breeder. Bearing in mind puppy dealers know what breeders expect to see and hear - eg the story I wrote here about the breeder of my foundation bitch who had a FAMILY visit and as they were leaving, having gone to return something they'd left, saw her puppy being put in the boot of the car, with x-number of other puppies! And never forget - so often the worst looking people often turn out to be the most perfect owners.
Good luck! Don't be in a hurry to sell unless you feel comfortable about the new home!
