Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Any Affix Ideas ?
- By L.illy [fr] Date 18.07.18 13:05 UTC
Hi everyone,
I will soon start my Shetland and CKC breeding activity.
I had some ideas for my affix but I'm not convinced, it's been months that I look I'm starting to be desperate lol.
I will like a name on the theme of Scotland or England.
A medieval theme or about British royalty.
I am looking for a name that sounds sweet and elegant.
Do you have any ideas please ?

thank you in advance!

Ps: I'm French, sorry for my bad English.

SOLASTA, its a Scottish word meaning Luminous or Shining.

Faiche - "Meadow"
Leannan - "Sweetheart"

Found them on here: http://archive.phonetics.ucla.edu/Language/GLA/gla_word-list_1997_01.html but I love Merlot's suggestion

When we first registered our affix, with the Canadian KC, living out there at the time, we used the Roman name of the town we lived close to in the UK.   Sadly, as there is no reciprocal agreement between the CKC and the UK KC, the name we chose had been registered in the UK by other breeders, different breed.   So when we returned to the UK, we had to choose another name.  Those hounds we came back with retained our Canadian affix and ever since, I have always felt we were our original name!!   Actually I wrote to the people involved to see if they were still active, using the first name and got a very rude letter back saying they were happy the KC was doing it's job protecting their affix BUT that if we wanted to pay them a 4-figure sum, they'd relinquish it!!   Hum.

I do think this is something way too personal to suggest a name for you - many people do use significant place names, or a mix of perhaps 2 people involved, if this applies.   I imagine it's getting increasingly difficult to find a unique name, given how many are registered.

Many expire though due to breeders not paying the fee? I wonder if the KC release these "dropped" names back into the pool, so that people can register them if they wish.

Also, I wonder if they advertise this?? (i.e. that this month so and so names have expired and are now up for grabs....)

I struggled to come up with one. I didn't want one that was specific to just my main breed as I of course have a Keeshond as well (nope, they're not my main breed!) but I didn't like any of the ones I could come up with from playing around with my name. It was actually my Mum who suggested looking at Japanese names and then I found one I liked! Luckily I was granted it and I have my first show next week showing under it

Sorry, that should have been 'the town we had lived close to.......' before leaving for Canada.

I don't think the KC produces a list of dropped affixes, which become 'available'.  You might phone as it's a good idea.   Some significant affixes, to the respective breed, become 'protected', so are there forever.
