Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hip score no anaesthetic
- By Diane21 [gb] Date 02.07.18 14:39 UTC
When I got my last puppy, 7 yrs ago, there was a lady who did hip scores without anaesthetic in Hampshire. I have lost the details and was hoping someone might know who I mean and whether or not she was still doing this? At that time the scoring was done near Eastleigh.

Southern canine imaging. They have a Facebook page abd have moved since you last went too. Still in Hampshire.

My vet does mine under sedation, always has done.

Many vets use sedation rather than a general anaesthetic.

Marilyn uses a very mild sedation but they are still awake and walking.

I don't have GA or sedation for things like x-rays or scans with any of mine.  My girl with cancer had a scan last week and I told them to give the wait command and they said it was easy peasy.  She was as good as gold.

You have to have sedation at least for hips and elbows as they need tying in position !

Marilyn doesnt tie up. They have handlers holding the dogs in position

Yye but its all restraint in odd position for any dog. Thats why Marilyn sedates too. My vet gives a light sedation and then ties , its much the same but less hands !! Never had any problem since I got her to do the first one years ago. I used marilyn before but now it's easier to use my normal vet and not travel so far. I am very happy with her ability.

This is illegal in the UK under radiation guidelines. No personnel are permitted to hold a patient for radiographs.
Safest and most comfortable way is under sedation, due to hip score positioning being in ventro-dorsal limbs extended. Sedations will incorporate an analgesic drug, if a GA isnt permitted by an owner.

I had been led to believe that it was not allowed too. Its owners (Or was when I used her) who hold the dogs, I remember doing it. I am very happy with my vet and have a great relationship with her so am right outside the door on hand all the time and we look at the radiographs together to make sure we are all happy with the positioning. Then I sit with my dog till they recover enough to go home.
Win win for me !

Penn hip xrays are in the USA done by manual holding of the dog. This is not allowed in the U.K. Fortunately a vet devised a method of mechanical holding the dog in the required positions & so Penn Hip is available in UK. The law is covered by the health & safety act

Shes moved premises now and maybe they dont hold the dogs, not sure as we can't go into the room whilst they are being done

I’ve used Marylin for a few dogs and one of my latest X-rays has the clip in it from the strap where she’s strapped into position. I’ve not seen anyone go in with their dogs on the new place.

Yes, I've had 2 dogs done with Marylyn at the old place and one at the new place.  Both places under light sedation (dog still able to walk).  At the old place, we went in with the dog and helped to restrain the dog in position.  No idea if this is legal or not but she's one of the most popular hip scorers anywhere in the UK and bazillions of dogs have been scored in this way with her.

At the new place, we handed the dog over at the door and couldn't see what went on for about 5-10mins - then we are called into the room to discuss the results.
