Having looked online at the cost of my dogs' usual flea/worm treatment, I have decided that it makes sense to ask for a prescription and buy online. I am expecting a charge for the prescription, but can the prescription be used multiple times or is it single use only? Many thanks.

Depending on the vet they may issue it to be repeated once.

I believe most will give u a prescription  to cover up.to 6 months meds .a prescription at mine costs about £14

My vets have recently increased their charge for issuing a prescription, from £18 to £20. The scrip lasts for up to six months, after which time they need to see the animal before re-issuing.

Mine charge £15. but + £3 vat = £18.00  Grrr - the vat!   Then Animed charged £20.28 in total for the Metacam.   My vet only issues a one off - it lasts for 6 months which means I had a couple of months left over last time.   Presumably they don't want an open Prescription in case they feel the need to see him, which they didn't this last time.  It's still less costly than buying the big bottle from the vet!

DOES flea/worm treatment need a 'script?    I don't think so.   I'm pretty sure you can buy such medication online without one.

Yes, Frontline Spray (I prefer the spray as it is less concentrated, but you put more of it on al over, have ahd local reactions to spot on version).

Some flea and others need scripts especially the combination ones like Advocate etc.

Some doesn't, some does.  It depends which ones you buy.

As far as prescriptions go - legally, pets on certain meds and treatments have to be seen every 6 months so that'll be the maximum time a prescription would cover for.  Then you have my current and past vets, who will still only offer a 3 month one - I have no doubt that is entirely a money maker because there is no other reason to do so.  The animal doesn't need to be seen after 3 months, only another prescription requested, and another fee earned.  I think it takes the P personally.

The cynic in me says 'money maker' too.   I don't know what kick back they'd get for selling the big Metacam bottle which I seem to recall was over £60. last time I bought it direct from my vet.   I told them what I could get it for online + a prescription and they were amazed but didn't blame me for doing it online!!   Especially as this is 'ongoing'.

Interestingly my new vet only charges £35 for a big bottle - last place charged £45.  So I'll not be bothering with a prescription for Paige, when I would have in the past.  I'll see how long it lasts then reassess but I suspect it'll work out cheaper to just buy at the vets, this time round.

IF I could get this from my current vet at that price, I'd not bother with ordering online + a 'script which this last time came to £18.00 for the 'script and £20.28 from Animed.  Inclusive of VAT

I just checked back re a previous cost from my vet ... £51.53 for the big bottle (180 ML) which + VAT £10.31) came to £61.84   On that basis alone, there is no question I do better buying online.   And I did tell them after that, what I could get it for online but there was no offer to match the online price!!

IF this contributor to FB reads this, I buy liquid Metacam, not tablets and despite the presciption lasting 6 months, Animed would not dispense that size bottle from my previous 'script (which lasted until August next).   I had to get a new prescription.
