Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / my pup has no bark !

How weird is this we have her a month now ,she is 4 months now..the very first night I left her in the kitchen I heard a soft squeek/ wine and then she stopped after that she goes to bed with no fuss at all..in the morning she does not bark for breakfast ..All the dogs I have had in the past would have been howling and yapping (the yorkies I've had ) the other day my mum and hubby noticed she doesnt bark..she does this soft squeek if we stand on her but to this day she has never had a good yap ..it's just funny ..I do not mind as I know how annoying a yappy puppy can be..she will follow me all over the kitchen watch me cook waiting silently to get a morsel that may drop without a peep from her. Is this weird or normal ???!!!

Our last Staffy never barked either . He could bark but throughout his 14 years I think i heard him about three times

my 6 mth border terrier hardly makes a sound either (bit of snoring occasonally !). only ever barks (yap really) when out playing with other dogs. i guess he his just content and doesn't need to ask for anything or get cross about anything. he has always been good at night too - tv goes off and he trots up the stairs to his bed !. i think we are both lucky - don't worry - you are obviously making your puppys life happy.

Charlie, our 5mth Lhasa Apso, is normally quite quiet - unless he hears something suspicious, when he suddenly has the bark of a much larger dog - i think he stole it from a GSD ;)

Sounds like my lhasa Barney :)
And my little shih tzu has a loud bark too ... two of them together .. ohhh

Lol, how can such a tiny dog have such a loud bark? And its so deep too!! Luckily he's not really a yapper for without reason - unlike my friends shih tzu, who just seems to *love* the sound of her own voice :) The only time it gets out of hand is when Charlie and our neighbours Westie, Tilly, decide to 'sing' to each other - that can be rather loud and interesting :D

I can picture them "singing" together LOL. Barney has a very deep loud bark but only if someone is at the door or he hears something strange. Molly only barks LOUD for the same reasons or if she thinks a take away is being delivered :) :)
Whe Molly loses a toy it is found pretty quickly because she wont stop until it is found LOL

It may come later :) Ours was very quiet - only sometimes made a little high pitched yip. The big, bark appeared when she got to about 6 months :) Make the most of the quiet now - you may be surprised later :)

Had to teach my staffy to bark-still only barks on command!!
Of My 2 elkhounds one barks for fun and one only 'sings' in the car through excitement when we're going to the park so I guess its a case of each dog being different!!

As you say each is different . My Staffy pup barks when excited ( just a little puppy bark) but if he hears a noise in the night his guarding instinct kicks in and he has a really DEEP bark that sounds like a much older dog

Years ago we had a Tibetan Mastiff who did not bark,he was 32" to the shoulder and he gave quite a few people a shock, He was so gentle but came up so quietly behind them, then again he loved fireworks, on bonfire night, he would not come in the house he sat at the gate and watched the sky, whatever we did he would not be brought into the house, sadly he died at 6 years old of auto immune syndrome. The dogue de bordeaux puppy is 5 month old and we cannot stop her barking like mad at the hover and floor mop, she trie's to attack it, and bite it, any idea's how to stop her,she just has to hear it being turned on and she starts barking.

honestly I don't mind the silence..she just looks at me and turns her head and I know what she wants..we have a silent understanding..the hubby always sayse I talk too much so ,maby she finds I yap (I'm constantly carrying on conversations with her :) )at her so much she needs not say anything !!!??? :)

Min my eldest lab barked for the first time when she was eight at a wooden carved pig! Ever since then she has learned that barking gets her noticed and so will have a woof when she thinks it is time for feeding ! Her mum Mars Bar used to do the woofing for her so she must have decided why should I bother ! Moose our 18 month girl doesn't woof but MB the 17 wk pup has a fine little woof on her !

I wouldn't worry ! If she needs to woof she will !

My first Spanish Water Dog never barked for years and has only started barking in say, the last couple of years. I'm not sure whether this is due to senile dementia!! (only joking Dilita(my SWD of course)!)
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 24.02.03 21:48 UTC
There's a Spanish Water Dog that has been imported, maybe if you go on Thursday or Friday she may be at Discover Dogs and she goes Wocka, Wocka, well that's what the bark sounds like anyway. She's so funny and I believe that her mother barks the same too.

My GSD won't sing with me :( *pout*
All my other dogs would happily join in if I felt the urge to go loopy/primal and howl my little heart out (its quite relieving, you should
try it sometimes ;)
But Kyra just barks at me when I do it.. Perhaps her ears are more sensitive, eh? :P

My dobe didn't bark when we got her as a pup. I taught her to bark myself. What the neighbours thought I dread to think:D
- By melmel [gb] Date 26.02.03 16:25 UTC
that's a funny one :) I fear if I did that my dog would think I am more crazy than before :) Never knew so many dogs did not bark always thought all dogs barked as over the years mine would never shut up ! This is so strange for me my silent dog ..there is a lady on my road and she lets her 2 westies on the side of the house and they bark it seems all day long..even if a fly passes :)

I had to show my Standard Poodle to bark too. She only did it to alert us though and was discouraged from barking for no reason other than excitement. I never reward my dogs for barking unless it is to let me know they want to go out or to alert me to visitors etc. I never let them in when they are barking - only when they are quiet! My two latest dogs (a greyhound and a lurcher) are also very quiet. I taught the lurcher to bark on command but the grey won't. This way, barking is useful rather than a nuisance. A yappy dog is a pain to live next door to<vbg>

Like others, I too would like a dog with 'less bark' what is it about little dogs and yapping!
I had a lurcher for almost 15 years and he like wizzasmums he rarely barked. He used to howl in a painfull fashion when the phone rang, and would also 'sing' (a sort of half howl half bark ) when offered a biscuit, oh gosh, never realised how much I miss him. My neighbours in-laws never realised I had a dog until he was 12 years old he was so quiet.

Ada is two years old and has only barked once that Im aware of. That was when she had her pups and the mastiff tried to wander into the room. We were so surprised! Her pups dont take after her unfortunately

we had an Irish Setter when I was younger and as he got older he "lost" his bark. It still makes me smile now thinking of him trying to bark when the door went and only a muffled sort of wheeze coming out, but it didn't worry him. (Don't worry we'd had him checked over by the vet and apart from that he was perfectly healthy).

My Black Lab is five months old. She rarely barks, it takes us to wind her up before we hear a noise from her. She winnes, squeeks etc, but a bark is very rare.
I think we are just lucky!
