If I couyldn't have a Dobie - my first love, I'd probably go for a Manchester Terrier.
Can anyone tell me anything about a German Pinscher - I gather it isn't another name for a Dobe (I saw a picture in Dog World)

I believe the german pinscher is a smaller version of the dobe(they come in red and blk/tan).Even smaller is the minature pinscher(min. pin)

NO, Archer, not quite correct, the Pinscher ist the ancestor of the Miniatur Pinscher and played a minor role in the creation of the Doberman. The German Pinscher was initially bred as a farm dog who drove livestock, defended the farm and killed vermin. This breed is older than Doberman and Miniatur Pinscher :).

The pinscher is as taylor says a farm dog. A very old breed. The schnauzer and pinscher were basically the same breed at one time, with smooth and wire coat types. It is also a good bit smaller than the dobermann. The dobermann pinscher is bred from (here I may be wrong) a mix of smooth coat pinscher/black & tan terrier/and rotty. It was bred by louis dobermann around the end of the 19th century for a guard dog. The German pinscher doesnt make a good guard dog. Too cautious.

Think most of that is close. Regards Mick

Mr. Dobermann was an abattoir owner and official dog catcher in Apolda. He started his breed by crossing a mongrel bitch of unknown heritage with a Rotti like male which also might have contained some GSD (this black and tan cross was very common in Germany of the 1800s and was usually used to drive cattle to the slaughter house). He bred them for aggressivness not beauty.
