Bought new Lhasa A. yesterday. Just read about vaccinations under HEALTH Board and am very worried. I didnt realise there were risks involved in vaccinating. He is 10 weeks old so is it okay to get him vaccinated now (was going to go to the vets tomorrow or Tuesday). We will probably have to put him in kennels when we go on annual holidays (ie not til next summer) so will he have to be done each year and can this hurt him? Even after having him for so short a time we love him to bits and I dont want anything to happen to him. A quick response would be appreciated. Ta Gina

Gina, after personal experience and much research, many of us have decided to protect our dogs with homoeopathic nosodes instead of conventional vaccinations but it's something that you must investigate for yourself and make your own decision. I certainly wouldn't try to influence you one way or the other. All I would say is that if you intend to put your dog into boarding kennels, then I believe that they have to insist that their boarders are covered with vaccination.
Enjoy your new baby!

Gina, like many others, I use antibody titres and nosodes where necessary. BUT it is really necessary, I believe, to have the puppy vaccinations completes first, because the chances are that your breeder will not have had antibody titres done to know the pup's immunity status, as it's a fairly new procedure.

Someone who I know casually has just lost her Rottie male pup, and his mother is ill with Parvovirus, neither had ever been conventionally vaccinated. Luckily the pups sister has been staying with a friend as had been in season, and is OK at present. I would always have the Puppy course done, and the first booster. I then boost every second year, but have them done for Leptospirosis annually.
It is very difficult, as some dogs can have adverse reactions to vaccines, but then dogs can also die like poor little Zin Zan.

Welcome to the forum Gina :-) Leigh
HI Gina
I understand your worries, I have a Belgian TErv pup now 6 months, and we had her vaccinated with the usual puppy jabs. As I understand it, the pup vacc. is usually considered OK, but it is the continual boosters which seem to cause problesm for some dogs.
We will have Banya tested each year I think, to see what she needs to have. I have heard that Leptospirosis may need to be done each year - think it's Lepto anyway.
Good luck!

I agree with val - I read ' what Vet's don't tell you about vaccines ', by Catherine O'Dricoll - also her website Canine Health Concern and was quite worried about things I discovered - however, it is somthing you need to research and decide for yourself - but it would be well worth the effort. Boarding establishments won't take dogs unless they are conventionally vaccinated, ( many dog training establishments won't either unfortunately ), but there are always pet sitters who will come into your own home, and aren't actaually that much more expensive when you consider the dog keeps it's usual routine and home environment.
Hope this helps.

My 12 week old Cavalier has just completed his course of vaccines on tuesdayu and since then he has been poorly. i know the vet said he will be very quiet allday, but he was ok, just off his food. This morning(Thurs) he is very quiet not even bothering to say hello just stayed in his bed. Phoned the vet and said to bring him down was told there would be no side affects. When they finished examining him they gave him some antibotics and was told to bring him back tomorrow.
This is my first dog so im a bit green, but very concerned that i was not told that there are no side affects.

He is alot better today, the next day he was more himself and eating better.
Today he is chewing and is very playful. Just took him out for a walk, holding him my arms so he could get used to the traffic, he nearly tried to jump out of my arms.
Thanks for asking
Hows your little one doing
