Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Murphy and pork ribs

Hi all,

Murphy's doing great:) He's on minced up chicken wings, yoghurt, carrots, etc and he's had a bit of a chew on a meaty pork rib. I was wondering if anyone had any better experience than I have on lab puppies and RBM's? I am a bit of a worrier about the bones which is why I mince up the wings - I don't like the small sharp bones in them! Also, Murphy can tend to be a bit of a gulper and I have visions of having to rush him down to the vets with a perforated something or other! For my peace of mind, it's easier to mince them down but he needs the bigger bones to chew on....is that right?
I have both of Ian Billinghurst's books but can't follow them to the letter.

Hear from you soon

Ruth:)

Hi Ruth , I get raw cow bones from the local butchers for Hudson to do his actual chewing :) Different to the bones that they eat ...Hudson tends to eat chicken wings easily enough , but the large cow bones can happily keep him gnawing (and his teeth clean) for ages :)

Just a daft question, but when you are talking about chicken wings, are they raw or cooked? I've always been worried about giving my dogs chicken bones, so never have, only once my dobe pinched a carcass out of the bin:D

Hi Jaffa,

Never cooked bones as they can splinter. The chicken wings are completely raw :)
If you're worried about feeding a chicken wing raw because of the bones (as I was) you can always put them in a bag and give them a good bashing with a rolling pin. (You'll find in the end you bash them less and less!!) :)

Hi Jaffa,

Yes, the chicken wings are raw....you should never, never give a dog a cooked bone.
I used to feed Sonny the chicken wings whole but somehow, he managed to crunch them up better than Murphy does. It's easier to mince them down and give Murphy larger bones that he has to chew. I must admit, I take them of him when he reaches the size that I think he may swallow whole.

Hi All,
Im new to Champdogs, I own a weimaraner bitch who is fed 100% BARF& doing brilliantly. She has wings& carcasses among other things for her breakfast. They must NEVER be cooked! A raw chicken bone is relatively easy to break (piece of cake when you have huge jaws!) but once cooked, it goes brittle, and instead of snapping, its more likely to splinter! This is when problems are caused.

Perhaps with the puppies, you could give the wings a wallop with a mallet type thing (Im not too clued up with kitchen things!!!) This would soften the bones& break them up a little making it easier for pups to eat.

Hi Vicky,

Welcome!
When you say chicken carcasses, does that mean the ribs as well?
I used these for Sonny but was scared stiff when I felt how sharp the ribs were! I grind the bones down for Murphy - he's 9 weeks and a bit of a gulper.
I know that in theory, the stomach acid can cope with these soft bones but......? I'm just a worry wort:)
