Topic Dog Boards / Health / Brown wax one ear
- By St.Domingo Date 28.04.18 16:42 UTC
For the past couple of weeks my poodle has had a lot of soft, brown wax in one ear. I've noticed it during her weekly ear hair pluck.
She's never had it before, and there's no smell, scratching or head shaking.
It just seems funny that it's only in the one ear.
Could it be a new normal for her, or something else ?
TIA

Could just be a one off, a mild infection, or could be a food intolerance starting - mild intolerances often show up as mucky ears.  Poodles are also prone to ear problems with having big, hairy, floppy lugs.

I wouldn't worry for now though, just get it cleaned out and see how you go.  She might just have gotten something in there that's set off an excess of wax.

As Nikita says, could be a mild infection, I'd put some thornit in there just to be in the safe side. All mine have had thornit put in their ears every months or so, for generations and I've never needed to go to the vet with an ear problem.

Sorry, I meant to also say that if it comes back repeatedly *then* I'd be looking at food intolerances but not to worry about that for now.

Thanks for your replies.
My first thought was ear mites, but I assume they would always affect both ears ?
You could be right with food allergies. If she gets fed too much rubbish ( toast and stuff from the kids !) she gets runny eyes, so it could be that.
