Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Newborn - small size and milk coming out of nose

My bitch had 11 puppies yesterday (a gundog breed).  One was obviously not right and had to be PTS by the vet this morning (he had had 2 fits where he went completely rigid, was very cold, hadn't passed any poo that I could see and Mum was not interested in him any more, so definitely the right thing to do).
His sister is the one I am bothered about.  I thought she was stillborn but revived her by rubbing with a towel etc and after a while she was moving well and feeding.  However we've noticed that milk comes out of her nose when she feeds.  She has obviously fed and  is moving well and Mum is cleaning her etc, but she does not have the tight round tummy that the rest of the litter has.  I've checked her mouth for cleft palate and can't feel anything.  The vet says the most important thing at this stage is (she is not quite 24 hrs old yet) that she is warm, which she is.
Has anyone else had experience of this?  She seems ok in every way apart from being a bit slower than the rest.  I'm wondering if I should have not put so much effort into reviving her.

I would look more closer for a cleft palate....

You do have to really look for the cleft palate by opening the mouth of the puppy so you can actually see the roof of the mouth. Just feeling is probably not enough to rule it out.

Cleft palate can at times just be a small hole in the roof of the mouth, which is difficult to see.

The only time I had this was with a real mess of a whelping - the vet delayed the needed C.Section and by the time this was done (by a visiting locum!), 4 of the 9 puppies were doa and one of the remaining 5, who the staff at the practice had been bottle feeding during the time I left home and got to the practice, had milk coming through his nose.   Why they felt it necessary to bottle them I have no idea - they needed rest and warmth only at that point.  Despite my best efforts we lost that puppy some time after coming home.   I don't think, but can't be sure, that puppy had a cleft palete but at the time I was frankly more concerned about my bitch who basically had been left too long before the C.Section was done, than her puppies.

I hope your puppy survives but getting liquid into the lungs, which I think is what got my puppy, isn't good.   I think your vet needs to take another look re cleft palate.

I checked inside the puppy's mouth but no cleft palate.  However the poor wee thing had really deteriorated quite quickly and was quite lifeless, not feeding and struggling to breathe.  So, having spoken to the vet and a more experienced breeder than me, took her to be PTS.  Very sad but we have 9 healthy puppies all feeding well and rapidly putting on weight.  The two we lost both needed reviving at birth, the girl more so than the boy.  Not meant to be ...
Thank you all for your advice.

So sad to lose even one, but unfortunately despite all our best efforts, some are just not meant to be ..... which of course, is basically why dogs have multiple births.    Now you can concentrate on the 9 lovely babies you have!
