Hi i am new to this forum and i have five dogs two afghans two king charles and a mini poodle. I would like some advice please. Over the weekend my fogs were in a boarding kennels and my boy afghan broke his leg it was so bad the bones peirced the skin. The kennels maintain they dont know how this happened and have refused to pay the vet bills as they say their insurance does not cover it please please any help would be appreciated

I think in these cases it a matter of proving liability. My home dog boarding insurance covers any boarding dogs for damage caused by my negligence. Other that that if its an injury caused by something out of thier control and your dog caused the injury to himself it may be that you will have to claim under your own insurance. Proving negligence from the boarding kennels will be your main aim.
Edited to say that a commercial kennels will have different insurance and I would have thought they should offer some compensation regardless of how the injury happened if only to keep thier good name.

Welcome to the forum

It would be worth having a word with Trevor Cooper at Dog Law. He will be able to advise you on the options (if any) available to you.

So would I!!   Surely any reputable Boarding Kennel would carry insurance but as already said, you have to prove negligence.  At what point did you discover one of your hounds had managed to break his leg - badly by the sounds of it.   Did they contact you and at what point?   Had they already had a vet look at the leg and treat the poor hound?

Lots to questions about what exactly happened here and you certainly need to involve a lawyer.   Asap.

When I worked at a boarding kennels although they did have insurance it did not cover illnesses, clients paid vet bills on their return. I'm not sure how a broken leg would be viewed but if it was a freak accident and not due to negligence at the kennels then I would say the bill is your responsibility, either to claim your insurance or pay.

Accidents can happen all the time, hounds break legs playing, bouncing around. I know several that have broken limbs running on flat grass with absolutely no bunny holes or anything. I would have a good look around the kennel, run and exercise area where your boy was kept, if you see something of concern that is clearly dangerous then of course you have a claim, if not I'd say it was just one of those things.

I hope your boy heals well anyway.

Do you know who they are insured with? Some policies will cover accidents which require vets bills like this one.

Best take advice and I would look at calling Trevor Cooper who is a dog law solicitor. Yes the call will cost you but you will know what your next steps are and whether you have a right to make a claim.

Will your own insurance cover this as I imagine it will be very difficult to prove negligence on the part of the kennels, presumeably they contacted you asap and made arrangements for him to receive vet care and did everything possible to make sure he was comfortable.  Accidents do happen even in the best run establishments but I would ask for a copy of their insurance T&C's to check if they are covered or not, it might be that they are unwilling to claim and push up their premiums.
