Topic Dog Boards / Health / Diarrhea in a pregnant dog
- By shakkitta [us] Date 09.04.18 05:34 UTC
My dog is pregnant and has been having diarrhea for 5 days now. She mate during the week of February 28. She's eating chicken breast and rice because that what was recommende when I took her to the vet. the vet said theres not much I can do because the meds could harm the puppies. Is this normal? She's kind of sleeping a lot and looks tired, but she eats and after sleeping, you can tell she's more energized when she wakes up. she doesnt poop during the day, just once, but then at night, she poops 5 or 6 times, small amounts and some with gas. she vomited once 2 days ago, but no more and she is acting normal except for the sleeping. Can someone please help me, I have been watching constantly because im really worried about her. Is this normal??

You might try adding some natural (not flavoured) yogurt to her food - if you can get hold of goats yog. so much the better, but this often helps clear up uncomplicated tummy upsets.   Vomiting can happen early on in a pregnancy but not the diarrhoea, usually.    I'd suggest there is treatment she could be given that won't affect any puppies - you might take a second opinion (vet) about that.

I'd agree with this, without checking what the actual product says.  I couldn't remember the name!! :red:

Canikur is the other product I've used (not for a pregnant bitch btw) but it might be a good idea to check with your vet before using either.   Both are a Probiotic, as is natural yogurt!!

What a vet!!!  Pro-kolin is perfectly safe for in whelp bitches and I would expect any vet to know that.  You can buy online at hyperdrug - you don't need a prescription.  And I don't agree that rice is suitable for a pregnant bitch.  I would be feeding a reputable grain free food.

If there is a medical reason for the diarrhoea then there are also suitable antibiotics for use in pregnant bitches.  After 5 days she is going to be dehydrated too.  I would not be happy with this vet.

Chicken breast and rice is not very nutritious for a pregnant bitch.
There are some useful  suggestions above that are safe for you to use.

I would suggest that you feed some green tripe, (full of good nutrition) this has natural pro-biotic benefits and the previously mentioned some Natural live yoghurt.

GREEN  BEEF  TRIPE.

Raw green tripe offers beneficial bacteria and enzymes. It has a desirable
Calcium: phosphorus ratio of 1.1. Green tripe’s pH is acidic, the protein is 15.1% and the fat is 11.7%. It also has the correct proportions of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.
One of the best constituents of raw green tripe is lactobacillus acidophilus. This is one of the intestinal bacteria that keep unwanted bacteria such as
e-coli,  salmonella, and listeria from over populating and causing health problems.
A balance of micro flora in the gut is extremely important to maintaining good health. These pro biotics help keep the animal’s immune system in top shape.

Digestive enzymes. The enzymes that help the ruminant digest its meal will give the pet the same benefit. Dogs and cats do not naturally produce amylase, so the nutrients present in vegetative matter are not readily available to them. Raw green tripe contains these digestive enzymes.

It contains the following vitamins and minerals along with other naturally occurring goodness:
Vitamin E, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate, Vitamin B12, Pantothenic, Acid, Choline, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Selenium.

SIMPLY DEFROST and FEED.  Do not cook the tripe it stinks!   Cooking the raw product can destroy/alter the benefits of the raw product.
