Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / cocking his leg

Hi, just wondered what age roughly did your boys started to lift their leg? my 10 week old pup has started to lift his leg on several occasions now, is that quite young?

Thanks in advance

Yes, it may well just be accidently.  It usually is round about the 7 month age limit, but nothing is ever set in stone, some will be much earlier, some later,  if he keeps it up, it would be a first for me.

Wow! Wonder boy. :-D

One of my boys started cocking his leg at about 10 weeks - bit of a pain because he wasnt fully house trained so we got the occasional leg cocked up the sofa

When one of mine started cocking his leg at 5 months I was told that was early!

my boy turned a year last week, and he still doesnt really do it. every now and then a back leg starts to rise, and bless him he always looks round at it confused!! lol.

I did wonder that :-) just thought i'd ask because OH had noticed too, when he was taking him out :-)
My other boy was about 12 months, but pees like a girl most of the time :-)

I wish mine peed like a girl, he has so much coat and doesnt lift his leg properly so always ends up sticky and stinking - I have to wash him off daily.

My boy first cocked his leg when he was about ten weeks, he was stood on all fours in the garden having a wee and lifted his back leg and promptly fell against the fence due to loss of balance, made me hoot with laughter.

He's now eight months and does a mixture of both. Sometimes pees like a girl and other times cocking his leg. He doesn't pee against anything he just stands in the middle of the garden cocking his leg, still makes me smile as I always think of when he was so little and fell sideways!

My boy was almost 1 before he cocked his leg!

and before long you will wish he had never started it....

having got two boys, one who cocks his leg on absolutely everything and the other one who isnt that bothered, getting my girlie was a breath of fresh air on a walk!

My boy who's 6 months doesn't do this at all yet, but I have owned 2 BC bitches who both cocked their legs.

My last golden never cocked his leg until he was almost 3 and then he didn't do it very often, I think it was because he had been neutered at 6 months old :)

My daughter's whippet is too lazy to cock his leg;  he just bends his long body with one of his hind legs barely a centimetre off the ground.

"before long you will wish he had never started it...."  No, I'm glad.  He started about 8 months and now still does the occasional squat but it seems to me the boys are not meant to squat.  Their anatomy points all the pee between their legs, when they squat, where I find it runs downstream into one foot or the other and leaves a nice puddle in the middle that the back feet usually hit, just in case the back feet happened to be upstream at first.  I admit though, I do wish he'd pee on the bushes and tall grass and snow banks AFTER I walk through them, instead of before.  :)

My friends Beagle doesn't cock his leg and he was neutered at 6 months too.

I have an Alaskan Malamute bitch that cocks her leg - sometimes very high!! My Cavalier bitch also scent marks on walks but doesn't cock her leg, she just squats and does a circle :-)

I can remember feeling very proud when one of my boys stated lifting his leg at 3 months old.
- By newf3 [gb] Date 14.12.08 15:20 UTC
my pup is 11 1/2 months and shows no signs of leg lifting yet!!!
- By Whistler [gb] Date 15.12.08 13:17 UTC
We were dead chuffed when Whistler cocked at about 7 months, Jake is 19 months and tends to stoop even now, mainly due to when he does "cock" Whistler is so nosey he usually sticks his head underneath and keeps getting peed on!!

My boy first cocked his leg at 4mths old, but he only does it when we're out. He's now 5mths old and still squats in the garden at home, has never cocked his leg in our yard, probably because he doesn't feel the need to scent mark there.

When you live with Bassets, you get to know that as they know they can't reach the heights of most other dogs (!) half the time they don't bother to lift leg, puppy or adult.   In fact I've had bitches who sort-of do this more than some of my males.   I do remember being thrilled when our first finally did a leg lift however.
