My girl is on day 59. It's been over 24 hours since her temp drop. She has milk and has been restless and the odd bit of trembling . How long would you leave it till you visited the vets ? I took her last night and they offered a c section but I felt it was too early.

I'm afraid I can't offer any advice, but if you could provide some more info, there may be others who can.
Useful info may include, how old is she, is it her first litter, is she a breed that 'normally' has no whelping problems, is she panting, nesting, contractions etc?

Again I don't set much score by the temperature although once it drops, AND STAYS DOWN (it will fluctuate during the final days), you should be able to expect labour to start within 24-48 hours.   I don't understand why your vet would 'offer' a C.Section.   None of my vets would ever do that until the bitch was over by a couple of days and clearly into the first stages of labour but not progressing.   And if that were the case, they'd give a shot to push things along and if that didn't produce labour, strong contractions, then go in.

Depending on the breed, at day 59, I'd suggest she could be left for at least another few days.   It's more about when the waters break.   To leave it to you to make the C.Section decision at only day 59, would have me finding another vet!!

To know she has milk would probably mean you are 'milking her'.  Don't!    Newborn puppies don't need tons of milk with heavy teats and once they start nursing, the milk should appear.      To milk her, bringing too much down too soon, could mean she develops mastitis.

Yes to everything MamaBas says...

To give you more detail, I would want to see the first visible contraction within 36hours of her temperature drop.  If you've already got to 24hrs, you have 12 hours left... Watch her sides for a ripple - that's a contraction.  Is she doing that yet?  You want that within 36hrs of the temp drop.

Second, once you've seen the first visible contraction, you then want to see a puppy come out within 2 hours of that first visible contraction.

Work out how long it takes you to get to the vet and leave in time to be at the vet by the 2hrs mark.

Vets don't know much about whelping or rearing puppies.  They can "do" a c-section (hopefully) but the subtle calls, they are not good at making.  So you need to know when you won't wait any longer and when to ask for one.

I'd hope they'd check that the cervix was fully dilated (preferably proven by the birth of a puppy) before giving any shots, otherwise there's a massive risk of rupturing the uterus.

Well yes, of course!

Hopefully the OP either has puppies or has gone to the vet by now!
