Topic Dog Boards / Health / Pain relief?

Buffy was speyed yesterday and although the vet said she would be in discomfort she appears to be in some pain. He didn't give me any pain killers for her but she won't move except to go for a pee and then she dashes around as if it really hurts to move. She has done a poo and a pee and is eating so I'm not too worried but would like to know if there is a doggy analgesic I can give her?

You can give her homeopathic Arnica available from most chemists or health food stores, or I gave my bitch asprin. If you are worried Jane give your vet a quick ring.

I thought about aspirin but was worried about the blood clotting factor as she's had an op. Perhaps paracetamol? I have homeopathic aconite I gave to Dillon for car sickness and stress, wondered if that might help. I'm going to the vet this morning to get a smaller lampshade for her head, she can't get through the door with the one they gave her! I'll ask for something but they don't seem keen to give her anything, at least they're not trying to sell me stuff I don't need as per Watchdog last night!

I wouldn't give paracetamol - I know it's lethal for cats, but I don't think it's safe for dogs either, especially for small breeds.

When my bitch was spayed she started to pull at her stitches and got a wound infection - rather than a "lampshade" I put her in a tee-shirt. Her collar went through the label at the back of the neck, and I safety-pinned the excess up on her back. At night for safety (rather than pinning it) I would stitch it between her legs -rather like a baby-gro :D - to stop it riding up. Had to unpick it first thing, of course! She was much calmer in this than the lampshade, I could "undress" her for walks, and she healed well.

Hope this helps. :)

You can give Disprol. I have been using this for my Bracco.

Paracetomol is listed as being poisonous to both cats and dogs!!!

I'd hold off giving her anything (unless homeopathic) until you've spoken to your vet. He may (should) have given her pain relief by injection before she came home....and if he didn't....shame on him!!

Thanks for the warning, I've got some pain killers from the vet now and a smaller lampshade!

Please do watch Buffy closely, we only ever had one bitch spayed, she was not herself after the op, but we thought this was normal as we knew no better. The op had been done incorrectly and a week later she haemoragged(sp?) badly and had to have emergency surgery. When we went to collect her, they told us she must be kept quite, thinking of her response the week before we said that would be easy, they went to fetch her and a whirling dervish ESS appeared :D. I don't know how well people's dogs have recovered from their spaying, but I would be concerned at an in pain bitch. Don't mean to scare you, just want you to be aware :-)

Buffy seems much better today, eating, drinking and peeing normally. She is moving more readily and seems generally more comfortable. She doesn't have a fever and the scar looks clean. The only problem is her scratching, the lampshade stops her licking and biting but she keeps scratching with her back feet. I tried putting socks on her but it didn't help. Luckily she can't reach to scratch her wound, only her sides where she has clipper rash. The other thing is that her 8 month old son now keeps trying to bonk her! He never bothered before, I think she must smell different, perhaps I should have had them both done together!

Give her arnica 30c every hour for a day then reduce it for the following three days, this will help with swelling and bruising as well as pain relief. Arnica is ok to give her along side the painkillers from your vet.
