Topic Dog Boards / General / Can I pick your brains? Work full time & self employed - tax
- By Gundogs Date 06.02.18 09:39 UTC
Is there anyone on here who gets paid on a self employed basis for work they do with dogs (eg walking, boarding, training etc) as well as having another full time job where tax is paid by the employer by PAYE?

Yes I do. But part time not full time

Fab, do you mind if I pick your brain?
I work full time and get paid PAYE by that employer.
For my dog bothering activities, if I set up as 'self-employed' is there anything I should be aware of like Business Rates, insurance etc?
If you would prefer to PM me, that's fine.

When i was teaching I also had a small holding. I filled in an annual tax return. It was classed as a business. Most years I failed to make a profit and the loss was set off against tax! Finally they agreed it was a hobby so i did not have to fill out the tax returns.

I'm self employed and used to have a part time paye job too.
Basically I kept them separate and my self employed income and expenditure went in on the tax return and the tax on part time was sorted by the tax man.

Same as Suejaw, a few years ago I was employed part time - sorted on paye by tax man. I was also self employed running a small ebay business, booking sec for village hall and selling crystals/tumblestones at fetes and fairs, with all 3 I filled in a tax return on line.

When filling in the online tax return u will still need to include your PAYE earning in the relevant place as well as your self employed earnings

I have registered as self employed and will fill in a tax return. My PAYE will be declared on the return. I am registered with the local council as a home boarder and have insurance. I think its wise to follow all the rules.

Due to your boarding activities, do you have to pay business rates?
- By Merlot [gb] Date 07.02.18 16:37 UTC
Quote from Gov.uk :- 6. Working at home
You don’t usually have to pay business rates for home-based businesses if you:

use a small part of your home for your business, for example if you use a bedroom as an office
sell goods by post
You may need to pay business rates as well as Council Tax if:

your property is part business and part domestic, for example if you live above your shop
you sell goods or services to people who visit your property
you employ other people to work at your property
you’ve made changes to your home for your business, for example converted a garage to a hairdresser’s

As we have done none of these then no we do not have to pay business rates.
