Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / stud dog question
- By kenzi [gb] Date 27.01.18 15:12 UTC
My own stud dog is very experienced, never gets his timing wrong and has never to date had a miss so this one has me baffled. The girl in questions owner insisted on taking her on day 7 saying she was flirting a lot with her own boy( neutered) flagging and backing on to him.my boy has never mated a girl on day 7,.however i know theyre all different and its not unheard of so she brought her over and he too seemed very keen on her.We got just a 2 minute tie.she returned 2 days later and he wasnt remotely interested but she on the other hand was going crazy flagging and flirting but he wouldnt entertain her,she came back today( 24 hours later) and the same again..ive asked her to keep coming back over the next few days,im hoping he maby just got ahead of himself on day 7 and that she is infact way too early but this has never happened before, today was day 10 which is usually when they just begin to start flirting, any ideas why this has happened? x

I always listen to an experienced stud dog.  My boy has never let me down.

She could very well be an early ovulater...it does happen....length of tie is pretty much irrelevant as a slip can produce a litter.....Trust your dog
A 2 day gap is good, so if today is day 10 & your happy to do so plus just to make sure, maybe see what he thinks either tomorrow or Monday but like I say trust your dog

Even if this was a tad early, conception may not necessarily take place on the day of the mating.   So if she has something there, hopefully all will be well.   And I too go by my, or other, experienced dogs.   Many's a time when the male seems to 'know' he's done the job successfully - probably all down to scent!!

I'd be interested to know what happens, so let us know.  If day 7 was towards the end of things (eggs ripe for fertilisation) she would have been a very early ovulater indeed.

Im wondering if theres a possibility they missed the first few days of her season and took seeing the first drops of blood as day one?i know i keep a very close eye on my girls and dab them with tissue when they are due so i dont miss day 1,this could explain being so early but maby im wrong x

I'd say that she ovulated early, and he got her at the end of her fertile period, and she had gone over by the next visit.

Could be an atypical or split heat, with her having gone off the boil.

Brainless..its funny you should say that, they thought shebhad a spilt season,on the 1st jan they saw spotting but it didnt come to anything, her swelling went down after just a couple days and i thought it must be a spilt season but being novices they werent sure, this will be their first litter.she is comin today so i will report back after she has left.

Ok..so she came over this morning,he did give her a sniff today a few times,he never went near her yesterday but absolutely no action whatsoever.she is still flirting and flagging though x

Can they not do a progesterone test to check?  It would suck if your dog IS wrong, and they miss...
- By kenzi [gb] Date 28.01.18 13:27 UTC
There isnt a local lab andt hey would have to send off for the test tubes then send off the samples after that,in hindsight it wouldve been best if they had but if she misses they can do that next time.He has never been known to ignore a girl who is ready,he is quite the opposite x
- By onetwothreefour Date 28.01.18 17:27 UTC
There's no sending off for test tubes etc in progesterone testing - they just go to their vet and the vet will draw some blood, and the vet will then send it off to the lab.  They will get the result the next day.  There are only a handful of labs in the UK, so very few of us have a 'local lab'

which company do you use?Its idexx i use and i have to send off for a kit x
- By suejaw Date 28.01.18 19:49 UTC
Kenzi if you go to your vets they will draw the blood and send direct to idexx. You don't need to send off for the kit as the vets can tick on their forms what the blood is for

What suejaw says above.

You don't need to do anything.  Your vet should know what to do and there isn't a kit required - a vet should have the standard stuff to draw blood and send it off.  Ask the vet to write on the form to give their approval for them to contact you directly with the results (not the vet) otherwise the results have to come back via the vet and it takes longer to get them - Idexx will phone you directly if your vet gives permission for this on the form.

I had a bitch ovulate on day 4.  I was fed up of her not getting pregnant, so went for progesterone testing daily from day 1.

I'm pretty sure it's possible and happens, JeanSW - but it would be a shame if the OP assumed this was definitely the case and then missed....

when i blood test i use the idexx kit so that the company call me with the results rather than my vet..mind you ive only used idexx when using an outside stud and only used them 3 times..anyway an update on the situation. They got their vet to blood test and got results today say already ovulated and when  i asked them when  they just said several days ago but are still taking her back tommorrow ( unsure why but maby just want to make sure she is definately over and see for themselves) this does indicate that my boy was infact spot on..would he know he had done in job?that would certainly explain why he wasnt interested when she came back 2 days later. The vet thinks they may infact have missed the first few days of her season, she isnt one to bleed a lot and keeps herself immaculately clean so that is a possibility x

It is why I do the daily tissue dabbing on the run up to an expected season.
- By kenzi [gb] Date 31.01.18 12:32 UTC
yes i do too and i did  tell them to do this. They came back today and of course he wasnt interested,im pretty sure he caught her on 'day7' well at least im hoping he did but think it was more like day 10 x
- By onetwothreefour Date 31.01.18 17:57 UTC
That is great news, I'm glad they checked.

The vet can call you with the results too, you don't need a kit - the vet just has to write on the form 'Please call the client directly' or 'I consent to you calling the client directly with results' or some such, to give permission.
