Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 56 nerves

Morning all. So toy breed Tilly is on day 56 since her confirmed tie, possibly day 57. I'm starting to feel the nerves kick in! I've been off work since Monday and will be until the puppies are 2 weeks old.

So how is she!? Well, she's been refusing food and a little withdrawn since late afternoon yesterday, resting a lot in between shifting positions a lot. I slept with her last night but No sign of whining/crying, panting, shivering or anything yet and no sign of the plug coming away yet so I guess today is just keep a close eye on her.
I tried taking her temperature 3 times but she was so distressed I decided it's not worth putting her through, now going by old fashioned touch!
I've let my mentor and vet know she's off her food, I know it could mean absolutely nothing and she might be wolfing it down again this afternoon, but I figured there's no harm letting them know!

Meant to say, she's hiding food just not eating it!

I know these days/hours before it all kicks off can be worrying, but you being stressed won't be helping your bitch!!   Just go with it - good job having a mentor.    I never let mine go over by more than 2 days from the first mating much as conception may not have taken place at that point.   If there's a small litter they can 'sit', growing bigger by the day making a C.Section more likely to be needed.   Ditto with a normal sized litter really although they don't often just sit.   Find things to do around the house, keeping an eye on her - good job also to be sleeping with her now as so often things start in the middle of the night!

Most probably mum actually knows more than you do (instinct - a great thing) so just be there for her and have your vet on speed dial!   I always rang mine when things did start, just in case I was going to need them.

If she's only potentially 4 /5 days from her due date, let her be.   The apple doesn't drop until it's ripe.

Thanks MamaBas

She ate a few mouthfuls of cooked chicken from my hand a couple of hours ago but not much change other than that. The mucus has started now as well, although from what I've read that doesn't mean much with regards to timescale either.

We actually have an appointment at the vets with our 16 year old this evening so if there's no major changes in Tilly before then, I'll fill him in properly at that, but he knows she's off her food.

Her second scan and X-Ray saw 6 puppies and after JeanSW answered my last post, it's highly likely Tilly will go at the shorter end of the gestation, just hope I don't have to cancel Bonnie's appointment this evening as it's a rather important one.

I am keeping busy haha, I have plenty of college work to keep me occupied (mature student). Doing my best to just get on with things as normal, I know my fretting will rub off on her. I must admit, I am getting a little excited with the nerves now. This is all new for us and scary as an unplanned pregnancy, initially with no idea of the sire. But this forum, my vet, my mentor and lots of research has helped massively so I'm a lot more relaxed and starting to just enjoy it for what it is :)

Any update?

Nope!! Within an hour of my last comment she was eating, drinking, weeing and pooping as normal lol.

She's quite subdued again today but still eating and barking at cats out the window (One of her favourite hobbies)! A tiny bit more discharge this morning too but still clear and normal. I'm shattered, sleeping with her so every little noise through the night and I'm up checking on her.
Have an appointment tomorrow morning just to check everything's ok, though she seems perfectly fine and content in herself.

This waiting is awful, really don't know how people cope with it every year or more! And I've run out of college work lol so moved onto decorating the bathroom

Right now you should be getting as much shut-eye as you can.  Do you have somebody else to do some of the watching because you need to be fit and able to be there for her when she is producing her litter and beyond although hopefully she'll be a good mum so you'll have approx. 3 weeks before YOUR work really begins - weaning etc.

And people wonder why breeders ask so much for their puppies :lol:
