Last year I used Frontline flea control (as I have always previously done) but my Field Spaniel had a terrible reaction. He had weeping sores like a necklace around his neck and chest just 2 days after applying the treatment. I got in touch with my homoeopath who made up an antidote and saved the day, and his coat. We now treat for fleas homoeopathicly and have had no ceepy crawlies. Anyone else had this problem.

Perhaps your spaniel is allergic to one of the ingredients used in Frontline, though I've not heard of anyone ever having problems with it before. I've used it myself on several cats, as well as 3 dogs, and they've been fine. I used to use a different spot-on treatment a few years ago, until it was said that anything with organo-phospates in could cause reactions, so that's why I changed to Frontline, as it's free of organo-phosphates and supposed to be 'safe'.

To Hilda,
It was not the first time or the first dog that I had used Spot On on, and had not had any reaction before. This looked quite serious with several deep weeping sores that were growing by the hour. I took the remaining satchels to my homoeopath, who made up the antidote from the satchel and from the open sore. It was given on the dogs tongue and thankfully by day 2 it had stopped weeping and only had to miss one show with him. I did speak to friends at the next show one of whom knew of an Irish Setter bitch who had lost almost all her coat after using Spot On. I now give all my dogs homoeopathic drops, made specially, for three days every couple of months and that has done the trick, no fleas and no worry.

Do you have to go to a homeopathic vet to get the drops? If so, how much do you generally pay for them, do you need to see the vet for them, also have you tried the homeopathic nosodes as opposed to conventional vaccinations? I would like to try them, but I will need to check whether A - my agility club will accept them
B - whether or not they are suitable for puppies

Hayley,

We go to an ordinary homoeopath who makes up the drops for us. They are definately ok for puppies, we have an 11 month old Field Spaniel and he been on them since he was 3 months old. Try yellow pages in your area under homoeopaths. If you live in south Wales then this practice is in Brecon, get back to me and I'll give you his telephone number. A good book to own is Homoeopathic Medicine for Dogs by H G Wolff, MVSc available from www.cwdaniel.com/homoeopathy3.html#Dogs.

My Yorkie had bad reaction to spot on , as soon as i put it on he was violently sick and then had sores come up , we were told to try the spray and he is fine with that.
