Topic Dog Boards / Health / How many hours is better to walk for dogs?

Is there any duration for dogs to walk a day?
Does the time duration applicable for all kind of dogs?

Please advice.

Dogs like to go for walks a few times a day say 3. But they do not have to be enormously long. So much depends on the age and breed. A husky could go for 6 hours pulling a sled whereas a peke might be content with 2or 3 10 minute walks.

All dogs - any breed, should only be walked for 5 minutes per month of age.  So at 4 months you can walk them for 20 minutes - but remember that is 10 minutes out and 10 minutes back.  You are causing bone problems if you ignore this rule.  It is really, really important to wait.

This doesn't include them playing and racing around the garden though.    You can use some of this time towards their training.

I think any healthy adult dog should get at least an hours walk a day.

I'd say at least an hour a day too.  Not necessarily all in one go - at the moment my guys are mostly getting 20 minutes first thing then 40 minutes later, because I can't walk them in the dark and work prevents me from doing more.  But they seem happy with that as a minimum.

In the summer they'll usually get at least 40 minutes twice a day and that has always been enough to them, even the breeds who are supposed to need hours every day - it's quality over quantity.  The best walks for us have different environments on the same walk, such as the park which has paths and manicured grass, then very large playing fields with thick hedgerows they can explore, then woodland to run around in too.  To find at least an hour's walk round here for a dog who can't be near dogs or people (Ren) is ruddy difficult without doing the same small walk over and over (which we all get fed up with), but if we go somewhere interesting enough, then less is not less, if that makes sense.  Much more stimulation makes up for not as much time, and we play and train at home too.

There's a misconception that a lively dog needs loads of exercise. All you end up with is a dog that is very fit, still lively and wanting even more exercise. Far better to give your dog something to do and use its brain rather then walking for hours and hours.

Indeed and it's often aimed at particular breeds, most notably the border collie.  Yet here I sit, with a BC to my right asleep in the hallway, who hasn't had a walk at all for months because she simply cannot cope with them - yet aside from ongoing trigger arousal issues, she is generally a calm, happy dog.  She gets stuff to do at home instead and she's fine.
