Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 62 or 64 day ? getting stressed out. (locked)
- By shezza [gb] Date 16.01.18 21:15 UTC
hi all after a bit of advice  I have a medium sized dog. she was mated in the 13th and 15th of November   am I right thinking shes either 62 or 64. days   I know they don't always take on them days and maybe a bit after. my question is how long shoukd I leave her before getting checked. shes sleeping alot still eating like a pig and losing stringy discharge. pups are active. shes been sleeping in her whelping box for the past 2 weeks . no problem.  I think I'm probably getting a bit scared as my friend just lost 4 out of 7 of her pups due to them being enormous and she was traumatised. I know not all births are the same I guess I'm just looking for a bit reassurance or advice

Due dates for the matings you quoted is 15 & 17 january
Your bitch could very well have taken to the 2nd mating.. It is better to be a day early as pups are growing every day but try not to stress as your bitch will pick up on this.. just see what tomorrow brings

so if she dosent whelp tomorrow she will start going over her due date? how many days over should I let her go over before asking a vet to look at her?

Dont forget dates will depend on ovulation

ok . thank you.  I can't believe how nervous I actually am. this is worse than when I had my own kids.

I've never let mine go over by more than 2 days, from the first mating date.  But I know mine go into secondary inertia so rather than just let them sit there, I involve my vet.   And you are right, if the puppies just sit, they grow bigger by the day making a C.Section more likely to be needed (size).  And if there are only a few, they may not be eager to come out either

I found with our litters that they'd all go 'quiet' (less movement) a day or so before whelping - maybe because they are moving into 'position'?   The first time this happened I freaked, thinking 'they've all died'!!!   Hah.

It is true that conception may not have taken place when she was mated but again, I'd not let her go more than a couple of days over.  It doesn't hurt to at least talk to a vet, much as all too many have NEVER actually bred a bitch and they are inclined to adopt the wait attitude, leaving it up to you to insist!

thank you for the advice.  puts my mind at ease a little bit i have a fetal doppler and love to listen in when shes fast asleep. I just hope she has them soon the waiting is horrendous lol. tiny bit of panting then back to sleep .our vet is great and that helps. will see what happens today

Well done mum - nice 'split' too - as one who always wants bitches (for the next generation).   Hopefully the work won't begin until you start weaning.   Take the chance to catch up on sleep if you can!  If mum does her job, this should be the time when your involvement is 'minimal'
