hi everyone, this is an odd thing to ask,but my daughter is scared because there appears to be a person murdering cats by antifreeze in the area-the poor cat involved is at the vet having"its kidneys flushed"(we both have much loved cats)
from what i have always understood, cats dont like sweet things-they have no sweet tastebuds(forgive me-this is something ive been told and always believed to be true-if im wrong,im sorry) so if the attraction in antifreeze to dogs and cats is the sweet taste, why would a cat be interested enough to drink it?-dogs,i could understand. id be really interested to hear what you think?and im quite prepared to be wrong-it wouldnt be the first time-thanks!

I think cats would pick it up by actually walking in it then licking if off.

ahh-yes possibly-hadnt thought of that-but it surely wouldnt have been deliberate?could have happened accidently?xxx

Whether accidental or deliberate, anti freeze can kill cats and therefore it is safer to keep cats indoors if one of your neighbours is being careless with the stuff.

According to supervet alcohol is an antidote.he used vodka for a cat that had ingested antifreeze. Just double checked and yes vodka is most commonly used aka ethanol as the antidote . Also cats may not be able to taste sweet but they may attracted to the smell  just a theory as well as licking themselves .it only takes a very tiny amount to be toxic

thanks for replies, interesting to know about vodka!its supposed to be a fair distance away where its happening-it was just my daughter had read on facebook, that some"b- ----d" was poisoning cats with antifreeze, and i thought if there was going to be a witch hunt,i wanted my facts straight-of course,it never crossed my mind it could be accidental, how could i forget cats clean themselves?!thankyou everyone-i said to my daughter that champdogs people have never let me down yet,im very grateful to you xxx

One of the reasons I don't own a cat....  unless one keeps it indoors, giving the cat a freedom to roam is pretty much accepting these risks - including the cat being run over which happens ALL the time, fights with other cats, cruel people and so on.

One lick is sufficient to poison a cat or dog, so licking it off the fur could easily be enough.

scary-time they tried to make it harmless, theyve known about it long enough xxx
