Hi, Is there anyone that has a dog with glaucoma ? If so how did you first notice something was wrong and how is it being treated.

I have an 8yr old Border Terrier bitch who I feel shows more white of one eye and looks very slightly larger than it used to. She shows nothing to indicate the eye bothers her in any way and there appears to be no change in vision. I will be taking her to the vet but it might be me imagining things.

Any info appreciated.

Glaucoma
is found in several breeds & is of at least types diagnosis needs to be done by a specialist(usually a BVA eye testing panelist) & not your GP vet(unless he/she is a specialist)

With respect, I'd expect a vet to be able to identify glaucoma although it might be best to have one who has specialised in eye conditions.   Rather than go immediately to one of the BVA eye testing panelists anyway.  It can be controlled with drops to ease the pressure BUT sometimes the eye can blow which would mean it has to be removed.   I'd at least start with a visit to your regular vet - he may refer you to one of the BVA panelists.  But from experience, when I asked to see one down here (not for glaucoma), the charge was horrendous (for me) for what was a 20 minute consultation, most of which was taken up in answering questions he should have had already via my vet who referred me to him.   I was NOT impressed to be honest.  A friend had one with this condition and when the pressure was bothering her, she'd actually go to my friend for her drops!!

Gonioscopy costs £57.00 as part of BVA/ISDS/KC eye testing & you consider that horrendous?? You can go straight to a panelist as part of the above scheme & get an instant diagnosis without having two vet visits.

Not ALL GP vets have the correct equipment to screen eyes & very few have experience in early diagnosis

Thanks for the replies.
Mama Bas do you know why your friend first knew something was wrong with her dogs eyes. ?

Sorry I don't because she'd been affected long before I knew my friend.   And I never asked!!   I can't now because she died a number of years ago.

Why have you gone to my visit to the Eye Specialist being for Goniosopy or glaucoma for that matter, because it WASN'T.  My hound had a completely different condition and I asked for a referral because I wasn't totally happy with what my then vet was telling me.   And what I was charged was MUCH more than £57. in any case.  I can't remember the exact figure, but it was a three-figure sum, for a 20 minute consultation as said.

There is a standard fee for BVA eye testing and Gonioscopy is an additional amount. The standard BVA eye test would have diagnosed any known eye disease. https://www.bva.co.uk/Canine-Health-Schemes/Eye-scheme/

But ..... not to get into any of this ..... again I wanted this man's opinion about what was going on with my hound's eyes (not being happy with what my normal vet was saying) WHICH HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH GLAUCOMA OR THE NEED FOR A GONIOSCOPY TEST.  OK?   The dog isn't being shown, or offered at stud.   I just wanted advice re TREATMENT for what was going on with him.

I was posting re large referral fees to an eye specialist, which can be avoided by going for BVA eye testing to a panellist.
