Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Purulent discharge 1 week after mating (no smell)
- By Kaya [gb] Date 06.01.18 21:41 UTC
Hi, hope this is okay to post. My girl was mated 1 week ago Friday and Sunday and she’s been normal end of season until today. Yesterday she had some old blood discharge but today she seems to have a watery yellow (it was slightly greenish) discharge and she’s cleaning herself a reasonable amount. It was a little smelly (almost sweet smell) earlier but now I can’t smell anything and it seems more yellow than greeny yellow and seems thinner. I can take her to the vet but it’s a weekend so really wanting to know if I should be taking her to the vet, waiting to see if it resolves on it’s own, is it normal? She eating and drinking well but not too much and apart from marking when out on a walks she’s not peeing more than normal. It’s her and my first litter and I tend to over worry. Thank you everyone. I have a photo of the discharge but don’t know how to post it. Thank you again.

I would be very worried about pyometra, to be honest.  This happens more frequently after a season where a bitch has been mated, than a season where she hasn't been - because mating obviously involves inserting bacteria and non-sterile things up there - like penises(!).

I would keep a very close eye on her and if anything else seems 'off', take her to the vet immediately and out of hours.  You may still want to take her on Monday - the vet may suggest antibiotics, although you would need to be sure these are safe during pregnancy if there is hope of it and if it's not pyo...

Let us know what happens!

I had one who, unlike the others up to her, came back into a more coloured (blood) discharge through the third week after two matings.  But it didn't smell or look odd and she had an uneventful pregnancy and 9 super puppies, albeit by C.Section.

What you describe could suggest, to me, a pyometra.   If the stud dog was a popular one and the owner didn't clean him well after his matings, it's highly possible for him to have introduced a bug in there, picked up from a previous bitch.   And if, like mine, she's low to the ground and you take her off your property for exercise, that too could means she squats and picks up infection.  I have never exercised our bitches off our properties over the years, when in season, and we've never had a pyo.  Others will no doubt disagree, but I'm convinced this is relevant.

Hope your girl will be okay.

Took her to the vet today as the discharge changed a bit. She looked really carefully and took temperature etc and all very good, took a sample of the discharge to look at but think it’s a normal discharge. :)
