Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Male Uninterested in Female on Day 11
- By redtin21 [us] Date 03.01.18 23:16 UTC Edited 04.01.18 09:28 UTC
I have a female (medium sized gundog breed) on her second heat and currently on her 11th day. My stud is showing little interest in her other than licking and mounting for only a few seconds. She has very light pink, nearing straw colored discharge and has been standing for him since Day 7 of her heat. The  She is maiden and the stud has sired one, large litter. They did not grow up together, as I have heard breeders having issues with stud dogs being uninterested with dogs they were raised with. I am new to breeding and have only had one other litter with a different female out of a different stud and the pair tied on Day 7. When do I give up hope that the bitch will be bred this heat? I feel so disheartened after putting so much work into these dogs so far only for them to possibly not tie.

Sounds like she isn't ready yet.

Second season sounds too early for a litter unless she went a year in between. Re days most of my bitches have mated around day 16 or 17 , seldom as early as 11. On the other hand some have been as early as 5.

I had a bitch ovulate on day 4, and another mated on day 28 with a successful litter.  There is no way you can tell without progesterone testing.  No 2 bitches are the same.  And a bitch doesn't always ovulate on the same day for all her litters.  So, no such thing as a "normal" day for mating.

I think you need to do progesterone testing and timing if you want to get to the bottom of why things are not working.... otherwise we are all just hypothesising...

A bitches readiness does vary according to breed and other factors, I am sure she cannot be ready yet and you will find the male succeeds during the season, dogs can sometimes be reluctant if they have been told off for their interest especially if the pair live together. My two used to sneak off outside and mate in the garden, we spied on them and they were both experienced so not too risky, just having a bitch in standing season does not mean a mating, males differ and some with mate anything that stands still while others show little interest until the optimum time.
