"With his black, brown and white fur, Longlong looks like most beagles. But the puppy has been sick with a blood-clotting disorder since birth — exactly what scientists in China had wanted. The pup was cloned from Apple, a different dog whose genome was edited to develop the disease atherosclerosis. With that genetic information now coded in, the disease -- a leading cause of stroke and heart sickness -- was passed along to Longlong, who scientists will use to study the condition and its possible cures. Longlong's creator, Beijing-based biotech company Sinogene, said Longlong is the world's first dog cloned from a gene-edited donor. With Longlong's birth, the scientists claimed that China had matched South Korea as a leader in canine cloning technology."

Thoughts anyone?

To deliberately breed for the disease is immoral, surely finding an already affected animal to study makes more sense.

I could understand them editing out the gene and cloning a healthy dog as a result to study.

I really hope they succeed, IMO, after talking to several established breeders of one affected breed in Europe several have now stopped breeding who's dogs have no known incidence, though some may have been affected & owners lost touch, finding the right homes willing to risk the human trauma involved is greatly reduced & DCM is on a steady increase, that thinking seems to be increasing.

Both Hanover & a Veterinary uni in Wein have been studying them for a long time.

It is heartbreaking when almost every one of these stories features an innocent soul which belongs to your breed. It is hard to think of an animal less suited to the helplessness and barren environment of life inside a laboratory than a mischievous, high energy, Beagle. So many campaigns, but progress towards the adoption of alternative methodologies is proving to be so painfully slow.
