my Jessie did and the trainer we go to told me to rub vinegar along the lead, no more chewing, but I am sure someone more experienced than mysel will have other ideas for you

Sounds like sound advise @ vinegar.
Or bitter apple is always a good one too..
Thats a good idea linsey, will give it ago and let you know how we get on. Thanks Linda

I bought a lead with a leather handle but with small metal links down to the clip ;) Hudson soon stopped trying to chew through the chain.
Melody :)
thanks Melody.this might be the answer chain lead for walks then viniger on the show lead.Mind you i dont want to ruin the show lead.cost me £10.Some one told me to rub baby oil on it to soften and it changed colour from beige to dark brown.

Hi, Have you tried a metal lead, Or what i find good is a easy walker it stops them from pulling and chewing. You control the mouth. It fits across the nose and mouth.
Hi Lady
Thanks for post.Things are not to bad with pup now.I used the vineger method with her show lead. When out walking my husband pulled the lead from her and with a firm NO.She has slowly stopped it.Fingers crossed she has stopped it.As we have our first show on Sunday and will look a right pair of fools playing tug of war in the ring.

If the chewing does return use a nylon lead, and as soon as the chewing starts, pull the lead upwards very sharply, it might sound cruel but it doesn't hurt and provides a shock which quickly prevents the dog chewing the lead. My trainer tried this with my dog and she stopped completely withing two pulls.

Be very careful of chain leads. I have known of a dog who caught a tooth in a link, the owner never noticed. The lead got a little jerk and the tooth broke!
My own preferance is Bitter Spray on the lead.

Thanks for your post Lucy,
Pup is 7 months now,Walks fine on the lead no chewing. Problem now the bugger has no recall when off the lead when other dogs are about.
linda
Ah, now there is something I can sympathise with too! My dog used to be so good at recall when young, infact people used to comment on how good she was. As soon as she hit 6 months - adolescence - all recall went out the window. However on a good note she is so much better now. I'm afraid the only answer is persistance. I started off using a retractable lead so that I could enforce the call, but I only called once so that she realised she had to respond on my first call. Off lead I tried walking/running away, looks silly but panics the dog into following, and then lavish praise. Occaisionally hiding from her when she wasn't watching also worked well, she focuses on me quite a bit to keep an eye on me so that i have her attention when i call. I also tried a silent whistle, that works quite well as long as the dog associates it with fun or food. The biggest problem i had was praising like mad when I had just spent ages calling a defiant looking dog on return when inside i was so angry and frustrated, but as i'm sure you know, you can't show your displeasure when the dog returns as it has done as you asked.
Hope some of this helps, i know it can be a frustrating and embarrassing problem.
Lucy,
P.s. You mentioned you were going to a show, how did it go?
Hi Lucy
Yes, we did the show and came second very pleased with her as this was her first showing.Tonight i had her in the park with my other dog things were going fine with the recall. She was playing with other dogs and every few moments i would call her back, praise and send her off to play.I put her back on the lead and the lady who had the other dogs Lab and staffy.Called her dogs in, then all of a sudden the lab attacked my pup.She bite her on the eye so going to the vets in the morning to have her checked out.Shame really as she was doing so well and now i am going to be frightend to let her off lead again with other dogs.I must say i was shocked at this labrador as i have never seen an aggressive lab before.

Sorry to hear about your pup. Isn't it strange that a dog that was friendly one minute is attacking the next? Anyway, I hope your pup recovers quickly and will not now become dog agressive.

My 7 month weimaraner was bitten, on the ear, by a terrier. She continues to be wary of that particular dog (fine by me) but she's not wary of others, so the chances are that your dog will know that not all dogs are like that. Now when we see another dog out she will often look at me before approaching. She's always been a little timid anyway (always the one who ends up being chased) but no adverse effects.
Stinks.
