Six confirmed deaths as Alabama rot reappears

"The UK’s leading expert on Alabama rot has urged vigilance after the mysterious condition claimed the lives of six dogs in the past month.

Scientists are yet to identify the specific causes of the disease, but the new cases – the first confirmed since May – add support to the theory that seasonality may be a factor in the spread of the condition, clinically known as idiopathic cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy.

Most cases occur from November to April and treatment is only successful in 20% of cases.

The following cases have been confirmed in the past month following tests at Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Winchester:
•Frilsham (Berkshire)
•Little Lever (Bolton)
•Rugby (Warwickshire)
•Cannock (Staffordshire)
•Torquay (Devon)
•Chorley (Lancashire)

Anderson Moores’ David Walker, the UK’s leading expert on the condition, said: “Although we are working hard to find out the cause of Alabama rot, it is still unknown, which makes the reappearance of the disease concerning.

“It’s always desperately sad when we confirm new cases; however, it’s important dog owners remain calm, but vigilant, particularly during the next few months.”

First signs

Dr Walker said the first signs of the disease are normally seen as a skin sore not caused by a known injury. Most commonly, these sores are found on the lower half of the leg and appear as a distinct swelling, a patch of red skin, or are open and ulcer-like.
