Topic Dog Boards / Health / Thyroid Check, how long?

So my Rottie has an non healing eye ulcer. It has been debrided, and a grid done, but just not healing. She is also under a dermatologist for a Pseudomonas infection, and  laser surgery. The dermatologist has suggested a thyroid check, just wondering if an one knows how long this takes, as I think she needs a referral to an eye specialist.

My boy had his blood taken in the morning surgery, and the quick in-house test result was that same morning. The rest of the blood was sent to an external lab for a full profile. I was promised that this result would be through the following day, but the vet actually phoned with the result at about 5.30pm. on the same day.

Thanks for your reply. We have an appointment tomorrow, so hopefully we will out then.

Depends how you do it.  In-house is quick but most vets won't offer a proper panel.  External takes a little longer - about a week for mine.  Or, send a serum sample to Hemopet in California, and you'll have the results within about 5 days.

Is she on steroids for the pseudomonas?  As that can massively impair or even block healing.

Unfortunately, the thyroid is in the normal range, (she isn't on any steroids, and has completed a long course of Marbocyl). So we are now making an appt to see an ophthalmologist. Think I am going to post a non healing ulcer post.

In range does not mean normal.  It just means she's within the range of what can be considered healthy for a population.  So different animals within that will be healthy at different points of the range.  Some need more than others.  So if she's near the bottom end, she may indeed be hypo and would benefit from treatment.  I've had 5 hypos here, and only one was out of range when diagnosed.  I myself never fell out of range but I am most definitely hypo and need to be on meds (I have to self treat).  I would send the results to Dr Dodds (Hemopet) for interpretation just to be sure as she has much more detailed ranges, specific to age and breed type.
