Topic Dog Boards / Health / Muscle jerking movements like hiccups...gsp
- By saga Date 20.11.17 18:20 UTC
Hi. My gsp was asleep when she had a body jerking movement of the same regularity as hiccups! She wasn't a bit concerned her eyes were normal and when she got up she had a drink and a wee .. No trouble. Back on the sofa she started jerking again .. This went on for 30 minutes! I phoned emergency vet and took her to get checked over. All ok! Vet said if it happened again to video it! On using Google I noticed that coffee is toxic to dogs and stupidly we do let her lick our fingers of coffee froth. Any thoughts please?

Two things come to mind .dogs often jerk or look like.they are running and other strange movements when deeply asleep and it's nothing to worry about .the other was my toy breed would occasionally jerk a few times usually when awake . We spoke to the vet and as it never got worse and don't bother her we felt it was better to just leave the situation unless rather than investigation. As for coffee highly unlikely in such small.amounts that it has had any ill effect.if worried video and show your vet as they  said

Thankyou for answering. I know that dogs do jerk and run in their sleep but this time she was awake with a full body jump in a sequence as in hiccups! I was concerned that it went on for more than 30 minutes! Hopefully it doesn't happen again as vet did mention neurological issues! She is only a youngster (nearly 4) so I'm really hoping it's not the start of something serious! I will take your advice and video it that is if I can stop shaking! Thanks!

Sounds similar to mia.we discussed neuro but as in her case it never got worse and was random.she was also not distressed by it  I decided that treatment would be worse than the cure so just kept a close eye on things . Hope yours is also nothing to worry about but u are taking the right steps imo. Incidentally I found if I touched Mia or even spoke to her it stopped

Yes! I wouldn't put an animal through unnecessary gruelling treatment! Some things are best left alone...I agree. X

Did you let her sleep for the whole 30 mins that she was doing it or did you interrupt her?

Hi. The jerking originally woke her up. But once awake she was sitting on the sofa (as they do!) still "jerking" and looking at me wondering what all the fuss was about! I've seen vestibular episodes in my last gsp. This wasn't a bit like that..of course by the time we got her in the car and to the vets all was back to normal. Yes she was awake during the whole episode. Thanks for your interest.

Reverse sneezing? We had this for some months, when looking back new carpet had been put down, just a thought.

Ruled out reverse sneezing...she's had that a couple of times and it's def not that. Thanks Lacy anyway.

Hmm, strange. I thought she was asleep.

I would be concerned about something neurological.

I would try to keep a diary of the circumstances surrounding the events- when and what she has eaten, when she was exercised, time of day, date, room she was in etc. Could prove useful in determining patterns if it is anything neurological.

Yes I do tend to write things down ...still trying to figure out what it could be... I gave her a first ever dose of Bravecto a week before this event! Now I'm wondering if that was possibly the cause! Thankyou for your interest and advice.

Totally possible I'd suggest .... after all it's putting a chemical into the dog.   Run this past your vet and check for any known side effects on any paperwork with the product, or online.

i also suggest u to bring her to the vet

Bravecto does have contraindications including seizures

Thank you.

Thank you. I'm looking into that link! I will also have a word with my vet about my concern with Bravecto! No doubt he will say that the episode is not linked to the Bravecto . But I will err on the side of caution and not give it to her every again! Thanks

Even if he does I wouldn't use it again if he were mine .
