Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Caring for bitch after difficult whelping

Morning
I posted a couple of days ago about my bitches temperature.. anyway all went well with temp drop and she did start whelping shortly after a drop in temp

Now she had an awfully difficult whelping which resulted in a vet trip for a jab of oxytocin (very very close to getting a c section!)
Shortly after the jab she passed a dead puppy born breech which vet suspected as causing the slow labour.
She has since had another 3 puppies 2 alive and 1 more dead.
In total she lost 3 pups and has 8 alive and well but she's absolutely shattered in herself!!

She's been eating some cheese but refusing anything else (buying tinned food shortly)

What would everyone else do in this situation, the vet said not to worry unless she becomes very restless but I still worry especially with a big litter

It's great that you've avoided a c-section.

I would not be too worried, but I would definitely be getting calcium into her.  Vanilla ice-cream is a good source of fat, glucose and calcium and will help with her energy levels too.  If she is eating only cheese, it suggests her body recognises it needs calcium.

Calcium will help prevent eclampsia (which restlessness is a sign of) and is a medical emergency.

Thank you! Great advice. She loves the ice cream
