Topic Dog Boards / Health / Puppy hyperactive on antibiotics
- By Alcauni [gb] Date 15.11.17 07:35 UTC
Hi

Our ten week old bitch golden retriever puppy developed a UTI on Monday and has been on antibiotics since (Synulox). After every dose she seems to go uncharacteristically hyper.

Whilst we're happy she clearly seems to be feeling a bit better, we're just concerned for her growing bones.
Has anyone has any experience of this drug causing this response.

She's not been abke.to have her second vacs yet unfortunately which is also a concern because of the infection. So we're worried she's going to be very behind on training and socialisation. We're trying to do as much as we can in the house but it's a struggle with recall etc.

Thanks :)

I definitely would not keep her home due to this.  It's important to take her out for short car rides, you can also carry her around, sit on park benches with her on your lap, sit at dog friendly cafes with her on your lap, take her to the pub with you, go to DIY and pet stores in a trolley - and so on.  There is simply loads you can do with a puppy which doesn't involve the puppy's feet touching the floor.  And then she can meet other dogs at your garden or theirs, as long as they are vaccinated.... and there are even some puppy classes which will take pups after first vaccinations.

Training you can catch up with any time, but socialisation waits for no man (or woman or dog) - the socialisation period starts to end at 12wks - and it's not going to cut you some slack because your puppy was on ABs, so unless you want to (potentially!) live with a fear reactive dog for the next 13-odd years, I would not be staying at home during this time.

No wonder your puppy is going stir crazy, it's not because of the ABs - it's because she is desperate for new stimulation and experiences.

I would have her out and about, definitely.  I would anyway, even without ABs - one injection and out the door for mine!  Heck, the last one was on the ground at that stage as she arrived with one shot and no socialisation at 11 weeks and nervous to boot.  Car boots, town centres, just walking round the streets with pup in your arms so she is beginning to get used to the world.

just to add that not having second vaccine is correct if she is unwell.

I agree with the others, carry on with socialisation as well as meds and once all is well then either consider titre testing to see if she even needs the second vaccine or give it to her after she is better.
Mine are out and about as soon as I get them  may not always put them on the ground unless its low dog areas and a few mins at a time  but being carried
I use a baby sling the type that goes over your shoulder like a sling for an injury . i also have medium and large breeds so know they get weight
I am sure once she is out and about she will be using her brain with all the new sights and smells will calm down
