Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch leaking milk at 7 weeks in whelp?

Hi, I have a medium sized Bitch who is 7 weeks in whelp and she has milk dripping out. Is this normal so early on? In 8 litters, I've never seen this before! Thanks in advance.

I've not, but then with my low to the ground bitches, especially when loaded, it's not been terrible obvious if they did.   Don't milk her - and to be honest, I'd keep a watch on her teats in case she goes to mastitis.  Not sure whether that would happen though.   Perhaps others (vet?) have had this?  I do know that newborn puppies don't need lashings of milk to deal with, initially, which can lead to problems if there's too much to draw off.

My old bitch done this her second litter and was leaving wet patches everywhere from over 2 weeks before pups.
Are you giving her a lot of calcium rich food?
My girl hardly ate that whole pregnancy and we were giving her a lot of goats milk and anything else we could get into her which of course we now know you shouldnt give to bitches until labour.
I have read that giving calcium rich food can cause the milk to come in early like this.
This was also the only litter I have ever had mastitis with and I think it was due to the amount of milk she had so be vigilant

Hi, I had a bitch with eclampsia a few years ago so definitely no calcium until after whelping. I will keep an eye out for mastitis too, Thank you.
