Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Elderly lab whining

Hi,

Our lab is almost 16.
She's not really a whining dog, in all honestly a very laid back old lady.
I do recall a period a while back when she went through a period of whining but have a feeling it was when we moved house so around three years ago.
Today OH went off to work very early and I went upstairs and nodded off and woke to whining. Said hello to her and went back up to get ready for work. Whilst upstairs she was whining again so came and sat with her and she stopped, when into the other room she started again.
Decided to work from home and every time I went to a different room she's whined.
Is it general old age?

No one can tell, if your worried a trip to the vets is the very best option

I'd get her checked out.  Old age shouldn't do any more than slowing them down so any change in behaviour at all should be checked over to make sure.  She may be in pain somewhere which can manifest in all sorts of odd ways (and not necessarily with an obvious symptom like a limp).

I would suggest pain.  Vet check just to be sure she's not suffering.

I read a story about a dog whining that turns out she needed to go poop - incontinence /difficulty holding on can increase with age too.
A vet check is definitely worth it and a diary of the whining (before, during  and after) will help your vet diagnose

Perhaps it's her eyesight, she can't see you so stresses. It could also be a bit of doggie dementia. Definitely a vet check.
Good luck.

It could be either pain, or confusion from senility/dementia.  Either way, there are meds and supplements which can help.

Hi, Just to say thanks to you all for replying.

Unfortunately she ended up not eating and becoming dehydrated and the vet said with the muscle loss and suspected liver cancer it may be kinder to say goodbye.

So sorry for your loss.  You did the kindest thing. X
