I have bought a new car with a boot too small for the dog so have had to travel with her in the back seat (harness plugged into seat belt) but am not having much luck with towels and blankets keeping the seats clean so am looking for recommendations for car seat covers.

the car is a hatchback and I want thick, waterproof covers that ideally won't sound like a giant crisp bag any time the dog moves.  Any recommendations or any brands to stay away from?

I bought, years ago (so their products last ) a green cover from Overthetop.   If they are still operating **, you might take a look at their website and see if there's something suitable.  They are not cheap, but again, their products last (which may be to their disadvantage re ongoing sales!).

Otherwise most things can be found on Ebay - but beware of things made in China.   I've fallen foul of variouis items just recently - they use distrubution centres in the UK but when you look, it comes from China and their service stinks.

ps   Why didn't you buy a 'dog friendly' car      I still remember missing our MG Midgets which had to go after our first Basset!

I have found the car hammocks work well,  there are slots for the seatbelts and having the front over your headrests,  stops falling in footwell or pushing between front seats,  and you can safely put stuff out of dog reach in the foot well.

Amazon has a good selection in various finishes.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I hadn't considered a hammock so that's an idea - are they quick and easy to remove when humans need to travel?  My partner has an estate so we tend to use his for doggy stuff and it was way more economical than my 28mpg landrover which really just travelled from petrol station to petrol station.

I had a look at the website and the reviews look great but £180 for the custom ones is more than I wanted to pay and I change my car fairly regularly so the generic one or the hammock would be good - and less than half the price!

Ouch! Liked the look of their tweed dog beds - £245.  The wee cherub thinks she is lady of the Manor and this would confirm it!

Sorry this might sound stupid but can you not put the back seat down and put a cage in, its what my friend does in her car

Not daft at all.  I have done it in other cars but the volvo has a lip at the inner edge of the boot and the seats don't fold flat so the cage would be precariously balanced.  I've only had the car 2 weeks so haven't worked out if the seats can lift up the way or any other solutions.

This! Every time we shop for a new car we bring dogs' crates along, if crates don't fit the car is unsuitable.... Dogs rule in this household

Easy to remove or just drop half for one rear passenger to sit alongside,  as thete is a zip down the front.
