IS IT SAFE TO ASSUME THAT A BREEDERS NAME THAT I GET ON THIS SITE IS TRUSTWORTHY, I DO NOT SEE ANY KIND OF RATING SYSTEM, SO HOW DO I KNOW AS ANYONE CAN JOIN THESE SITES. HELP

Hi GUEST
I would say no..it's not safe to assume anything...but if you make contact with one or two you have every right to ask as many questions as you like and find out how they go about breeding , what health checks they do on any dog that is used, what after sale support they give, what happens if there's a problem with the dog and you needed to return it etc etc :)

I would say it is your responsibility to decide for yourself if breeders listed here are of a standard you require.

Find out the normal breed tests required for the dog you are after and check they have been done, ask lots of questions and expect to be asked lots in return.

It would be impossible for Champdogs to personally *vet* all breeders listed.

Hi Guest,
As the others have said, don't assume anything. You really must do your own checks, just as breeders will do with puppy enquirers. Even the Kennel Club lists of breeders doesn't mean they're reputable - only that they've paid to be put on the list. :(

As all the lawyers say - Caveat Emptor.

If you want a dog of a chosen breed, contact the national breed club and ask who they would recommend, not who has pups available. Then be prepared to wait for the right pup from the right breeder. You will own a dog between 8 and 18yrs so a few months wont make any difference. In my opinion, decent breeders dont have to advertise and certainly dont offer their puppies on this sort of site unless its to add you to a waiting list to be vetted later. I havent advertised a pup for 13yrs now. All my homes are referrals from other breeders or the breed clubs.
Best of luck. Ask lots of questuions. The only stupid question is the one that isnt asked!

I have a webpage on here but havent bred a litter for six years I just wanted to put on my Dogs achievements but I have never had to advertise a litter in the past.
There are some respectable breeders on here and the internet is becoming almost an everyday thing for searching for things and if it points people in the right direction then thats good this site is in my opinion is a valuable source for any questions dog related you may have there is always an enthusiastic response.
Its ok saying I dont have to advertise thats ok but some breeders on here are happy to give breed advise etc they are not just on to sell puppies and when some puppy farmer types tried to get on they were moved off very quickly .
Also the breed clubs are a good source of information and a good place to start the numbers are available from the kennel Club, also Dogs Today have lots of volunteer advisors you can ring as well.

By the Way Jane what breed do you have if you dont mind me asking?

Jane there are some very good reputable breeders who list themselves on this site. There are also some less desirable people too - but that is true of any medium covering any hobby/pastime etc. Please don't assume that everyone on here is a risky character. All prospective owners should satisfy themselves that they are happy with the breeder they are talking to and eventually getting a puppy from. Many think the KC puppy list is a fool-proof list - it's not - but similarly - not all on it are bad by any means.

Mattie - from Jane's profile - she groomes and breeds mini smooth haired daxies

i would happily use this site to advertise a puppy if need be,--sometimes my pups are all spoken for and im turning folk away, and then find im not happy with someone whos booked one, -therefore have one old enough to go available, as ive helped my previous enquiries find a puppy i might then advertise the one i find i then have for sale- i too get many enquiries but if the unexpected happens, id advertise, as id rather have the pup settled into its new home that stay until my next enquirey all the while getting used to living here, --cant see a problem myself

Also if you do not breed frequently you can't expect people to wait a 12 month for one of your pups, if you know a fellow breeeder has a litter, doesn't seem right to me!

I don't take bookings for pups until I have a bitch due for mating, then let the people know when pregnancy confirmed. Once pups are born, those who want to definately proceed pay a deposit, the rest will be advertised, listed with the breed club etc. Don't think it fair to rely on the breed club to sell your pups for you.

Another thing to consider is if responsible ethical breedders choose not to advertise, then they are leaving the field open to the puppy farmers!!!!

When I get enquiries for my breed from any lists I am on, it gives me the opportunity to discuss the breed, and when I have no imminent litter I think the people asking can trust that I have nothing to gain from a hard sell. I have probably helped more people find a pup from a fellow breeder, than I have ever sold through advertising myself.

I am also a breed advisor for Dogs Today, and when enquiries come about the breed from this I NEVER let on that I am having a litter of my own, but put them in touch with the breed club secretary for the breeder list that she has. It has been quite ammusing to have an enquiry back from a surprised person, who had made initial contact with me!!!

We have all seen the wanted posts, and how hard it is for people to source a well bred puppy, so by not advertising (even when we don't need to) is not helping! Even if I can't help a person with a puppy, I can offer advice, and advise who is planning a litter, and why it would be best to wait for a well bred one!!!
