Topic Dog Boards / General / I need a raincoat - for a Basset
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 23.10.17 12:23 UTC
Can anybody help.   This is a touch specific given the breed, but rather against my feelings re coating Bassets, I have come to the conclusion that it might be a good idea to get an unlined mack for my Basset given his structural problems and the amount of rain we are having down here at the moment.   It's hardly fair really that my Whippet has 3 coats of varying thickness and use, and he none.

Now comes the problem - he has a very long back - measures 28 " or 70 cm withers to croup and the wide(r) chest a Basset has vs something like a Labrador.   I'm looking for one that just has a girth strap and obviously no 'legs'.   I've looked on Ebay and found one that might fit, but can anybody give me a link to somebody who maybe makes to order?

Thanks -  this isn't a 'fake'

Before you go ahead and order J, Lucas had one (one careful owner & very little mileage!), know I've come across it in recent months, let me if I can find it send it to you?

You need to move to Suffolk, we've been here for six weeks and we've hardly had a drop. I keep hearing how it's been a wet summer everywhere apart from Suffolk where it seems we had a lovely dry one. My only problem is that we dont actually live here, only have a static, but spend as much time as we can there.

Hope you find a suitable coat, there are many days back home where I wish there was something that I could use on my GR that would cover her undercarriage and legs only as she often comes back plastered in mud and needs to be hosed off

Have you considered contacting "Equafleece". They are easy to speak to and always try to help.
Their coats are lightweight and warm and keep the water out, they mould to the shape of the dog wearing it very easily and only a single belly strap. I like the polo neck ones, our dogs love to wear them after a hard days work. (they help the dogs dry and warm up quickly)

Again many thanks for the suggestions - I'll see whether the one from Lacy, which was used by a Basset, fits.   If not, I will explore further.

I sometimes think we made a mistake moving West (damp weather) although it's warmer on balance, than 'up East'.   I'd love to move closer to Newmarket again tho.

I swear by these. They're made to measure by Aileen in Scotland.

Hope you find something suitable

Wait Ok,  have in the past tried one for a Basset but whether it was just not the right size but the polo version was far too small around the neck & chest.

Update.    I went ahead and ordered what looked like a super coat, grey check, in the right length and with a chest strap as well as a girth strap, from Hyperdrug.   It arrived this morning and I have to say it's beautifully made, the right length etc. BUT the sides hung down like a jousting horse, almost touching his feet!!  And putting it on, my Basset refused to MOVE!!   So very sadly it's gone back.   I hope the one offered here will be better in terms of fit - I only ordered the one I did as I saw one of the right length and can always do with two for him after all.

So I may have to shelve this idea and just let him get wet and dry him when he gets home

I have another possibility who said she can make me one to fit ..... I bought a sling from her for Frankie when he was not good on his legs.   She has a webite - dogcoats-direct.co.uk   But I am now waiting on the one from my friend before I do any more.
