Hi All
Any experiences with pancreatitis please?
One of my Dogs aged 15 has pancreatitis confirmed today by bloods. She looks uncomfortable but is eating chicken breast and fish tonight . She has refused her dry food for the last three days.
The vets want her in tomorrow to put her on a drip but now she is eating and drinking oralade is there any need? Don't want to stress her. What is the usual course of action now? Anti inflammatories? Pain relief ? Although the vet did say Metacam can make it worse. I understand she needs low fat food
I don't want this to drag on if she is not going to make a good recovery but would appreciate anyone sharing there thoughts and experiences on this. Thankyou

Those people with dogs that I have known with this issue have fed original tinned Chappie, and/or poached white fish (most supermarkets do value fillets) with boiled browbn rice.

My boy had pancreatitis. He did well on very low fat food (Burns) and also had pancreatic enzymes sprinkled onto his food (Pro-Enzorb, I think they were called).
We found that even Chappie and chicken (usually so helpful) was too rich for him and we had to stick to the lowest possible fat.
He settled well on the Burns and his digestion was good until, sadly, he had to be PTS for unrelated conditions.
Hope your girl soon feels more comfortable.
One of ours also had pancreatitis. The measures needed depend on how severely the dog has it, how long it has been going on for, etc etc.
Our dog was also fed Burns because it is very low fat and we used only lean chicken for treats - no fatty treats like hotdogs or cheese. It went away by itself after a few weeks.
The only symptom she had was extremely bright yellow and slightly soft poop.
Drugs like metacam can actually put more stress on the body because the liver has to filter that drug out and it does damage the liver (which is constantly repairing itself - but clearly not functioning well during pancreatitis).
Thankyou for the replies,
She is a bit poorly at the moment to just treat with diet. Hoping if she pulls through we can manage it that way. She is in the bets on a drip at the moment as was in severe pain last night and not eating or drinking . I hope I've done the right thing for a 15 year old dog :(

Ah, poor girl. These decisions are so difficult. Hope she comes through and feels a lot better soon.
Thankyou everyone but it was too much for her. She didn't respond to the drip , the Morphine knocked her out and gave her some peace but as soon as it wore off she was panting and fretting. I could see it in her eyes..... She had had enough :(
Thankyou for the suggestions. She was incredible, I bred her, she knew all my secrets. Xx

Oh, I am so sorry. How very sad. She was a wonderful age but I know that does not help you to feel any better when you have to make that hard decision ... You did the right thing.
Your girl sounds splendid and you must be so proud to have bred her. May she rest in peace and, in time, give you the happiest of memories.
Wishing you strength. XX

So sad but she is at peace now and such a great age
Ah, that's sad :( I hate when you can see in their eyes that they are suffering and you can't do anything, it's awful. Glad she is at peace and it's a great age, too.
