Our 20 week Lhasa Apso, who was purchased from one of those absolutely *marvellous* (dont worry, that is a sarcastic stress!) 'puppy supermarkets' is, by all accounts. a pedigree. However, I have recently heard that as he is not Jennel CLub registered, he is not considered to be?? IS this true?? Dont get me wrong, we love him to pieces, regardless, but i was just wondering - we have very little understadning of this subject. We do have a certificate stating that he is registered with the 'Dog lovers' club, or some such, but i suspect that this is actually a load of old tosh? Can anyone help?

In addition, I have been brought to understand that as he is not KC reg, he is unsuitable for breeding. As this is the case, we are considering having him done. However, other owners that we have spoken to have trotted out the 'you never snip a pedigree' type advice - what do more experienced people think?

Thanks

Majix, run a search using the facility in the top right hand corner of the forum page. There are many past threads on this topic.

Did the 'place' where you purchased your pup from say he was KC reg or not? If he is registered with the Dog Lovers then he will not be able to be shown at KC licenced events other than 'Companion Dog Shows' nee Exemption Shows. Yes you can breed from him but if you are really serious about the breeding bit then I would advise you to research Lhasa Apso's thoroughly and buy a well bred KC registered pup from health screened parents.
Whether you neuter him or not is up to you. The fact that he is a pedigree/pure bred is irrelevant.

Hi Bec

No they never siad he was KC reg, but even if they had we would have taken it with a hefty bucketful of salt - we were naive, and i suppose irresponsible, to deal with such a place, but trust me, we will NOT be making such a mistake in the future. We weren't intending to breed from Charlie, but wanted to clarify so that if we do take an interest in future breeding (far in the future!), which we have been considering, that we had some understanding as a starting point.

Thanks for the advice

Hi
Dog lovers reg is just a meaningless peice of paper ,sorry.I could write down 5 generations of ancestors for my neighbours mongrel and send it off saying its a pedigree Husky and they would send back the reg. papers!!No checking,no verification etcc. You can pluck names for your dog and its parents from thin air-it doesn't matter.
As for breeding, you are unlikely to be able to breed your dog to another Lhasa apart from another unreg. one down the road.Responsible Pedigree dog breeders want to breed healthy good examples of there chosen breed which means health tests and studying pedigrees.
Love your dog for the wonderful pet he is and if you want to breed research your breed and approach a good breeder.JMHO

Thanks for the reply :) Suspected as much, but its nice to get some clarification!! We weren't wondering so much about breeding Charlie as information for the future - is it just me, or once you get a dog, does one just not seem enough?! Charlie is a fantastic dog, and will be a much loved member of the family, regardless of any pieces of paper, legitimate or otherwise ;)

Thanks Again
