My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Charlie, keeps shufflling along the floor on his bottom. It looks so funny, but i'm worried it means he's got worms? i've been worming him regularly though, so he shouldn't have. Is this just a behavioural peculiarity in Cavaliers?

It's more likely to be blocked anal glands, which can be squeezed clear by the vet.

Hi Cathy. The vet emptied his anal glands a few weeks ago, and he started doing it again straight away though.

I've got cresteds and they definitely do it to clean their bums but i've managed to more or less stop it. I didn't want 6 dogs wiping their bums on my carpets :)

My cav Charlie is nearly 7 months old. I got him off the findit.co.uk pet pages, but originally he came from a breeder in Wales.

Cavaliers do unfortunately get impacted anal glands and this causes them to shuffle on there bottoms. A trip to the vets where he can show you how to squeeze these and empty them will be of use in the future. Not a very nice job but needed...
when attempting remember the nose peg :-)

Hi Kate
I have two cavaliers and some advice I was goven on a cavalier specific forum seems to have worked. I put a teaspoon of bran (the normal stuff you can buy in health food stores) in their feed and it seems to do the trick. I know lots of people on the CKCS forum swear by it as it makes poo nice and firm and thus ensuring anal glands are emptied naturally. Might not work but could be worth a try!
Oh and the other thing is that as soon as the vet squeezes the glands they can get a bit sore, so that could be why your cavalier "scooted" as soon as he got home.
Hope the bran works!
love
