Hello, new here just looking for some advice from anybody who has mated a bitch abroad.  We are heading over to Spain next week with our bitch who is due to be mated to a lovely CH out there.  We have the passport ready and have a vet out there on hand for progesterone testing.  We are heading out around a week earlier than we think she is ready so we get the timing right then plan to stay for a further week.  When we return to the UK we need to have the bitch de-wormed.  I know normally during the first trimester this would not be done but obviously to ensure compliance with UK/Border Regulations we need to do this.  My question really relates to the worming aspect, has anybody mated a bitch abroad and returned and had to do this?  What are the risks of worming around day 10 of a pregnancy and what wormer would be safest that meets the requirements?

This January after my girl was mated I took her to the shows abroad twice, first time when she was just over two weeks pregnant, and second time when she was 3.5 weeks. I asked the vet to use Droncit instead of Drontal Plus, because the former has a single active ingredient praziquantel which is believed to be totally safe.

Tbh my vet thinks Drontal is just as safe providing there is no overdose, but I read somewhere that combination of praziquantel/pyrantel/febantel may not be so good in early pregnancy, however maybe my vet is right and its only the overdose of that that isnt's safe?

In any case I thought not to risk it and just used Droncit. All was well at 62 days my girl gave birth to four fat and even puppies with super bone, they are 3.5 weeks old now and doing great.

I have done so twice October 2006 (so had to do Frontline flea and tick treatment too), to Finland and Dec 2010 to USA.

Lucky both times.

I used Frontline and also a tapeworm only wormer.

It was Droncit I used again for same reasons just the one chemical

Thanks very much, you hear so much conflicting advice and opinion you start to drive yourself crazy with worry.  I'll ask for the Droncit and keep everything crossed we have a good result.

Buy it in advance and bring it with you just in case, I noticed some vet practices stock only Drontal these days.

Agree I took my own products for the oversess vet to administer.  Make sure they use correct date format in the passport ( this was especially important with my USA trip)
