Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 64 days pregnant toy breed

Hi,
My little lady was 9lbs pre-pregnancy so a toy breed but not a tiny one. She's 64 days since first mating and is expecting 5 or 6 puppies.

We've had unstable temps for the past week (she's gone to the high 36s on more than one occasion, her stable seems to generally be 37.4) and tbh I'm giving up on the thermometer (we know the temps are correct as they tally with the vet's but she's all over the show). Other than that we've had a bit of digging and she's been very clingy but no other usual signs. Over the past few days she's had some dark brown/ black discharge which the vet has insisted is normal and probably old blood. It's definitely not green but it's sitting uneasy with me.

I'm insisting she goes for a scan today- just to check the position of the pups etc though the vets just seem to think I'm neurotic. I am a bit but she's my baby and I don't want anything to happen to her. She's the size of a house and I can't imagine she could possibly be comfortable. Pups moving about as ever.

Am I just being a neurotic numpty or do you think there's cause for concern?

Just to update- I just got a temp of 36.4. Vet has agreed to see her at 12.40.

No it's not normal most likely there is a dead pup stuck and your poor bitch most likely now has septicemia.

I'd be worried -small bitches with large litters tend to give birth early, not late. She's a bit bigger than my bitches but for mine past 60 days is pretty much unheard of. If she was mine, I'd want a section.

Thanks. I tried to insist on it but they refused and said it would be more harmful than beneficial to do an elective. I'm not happy about it at all. I didn't think it was right but they acted like we were totally neurotic. She's in with the vet now (w/ my husband as I'm chronically ill). She hasn't had a fever at all and her temperature is very low today. I was worried the dark discharge could mean there was a dead pup. They've left me feeling thoroughly undermined.

I have been breeding toys for many years and I know that the smaller breeds are prone to inertia.

I don't know any vet that has breeding knowledge.  They just get bitches with problems and have probably never whelped a bitch.  Their expertise is in sections when a bitch has problems, and this is their area of expertise.  I would be going to my vet and saying I want a section NOW.  My bitch, my choice.  64 days is far too long for a toy.  Mine normally go 56 days, perfectly viable whelps.

I would be rushing your girl to a vet who is willing to carry out your wishes.  No wonder she looks sad, poor girl.  I am genuinely worried about her.

Hopefully lack of response is due to looking after bitch and babies.
