Hi all we have recently had our first litter of puppys, our bitch has had a really bad time firstly having a c section and then getting preclampsia she's been so poorly back and for the vets, we have been devastated by what has happened to her. We are going to have her spade. There's one girl puppy in the litter and I don't want her to go through what her mum has can I put restrictions on her to stop her been mated ?

So sorry your girl has had such a horrible time, the only way you can control your puppy's future is to keep her, no restriction put on when she is sold will have any effect if her new owner wants to breed a litter or she accidentally gets pregnant.

You can place an endorsement on her KC registration, get it written into your contract that she is not to be bred from, but ultimately if someone really wants to breed from her, that won't stop them. My best suggestion is to closely vet the potential new owner and if in any doubt that will want to breed from her, move on to someone else.

Thankyou so much for your replys, Im going to keep her we have been so sad what has happened to our girl we love her so much, she seems to be doing better today, she's been to the vets twice and had a calcium injection and went back yesterday to get sum tablets to try get rid of her milk as she is so swollen and full of milk. We are bottle feeding the baby's there doing so well. Thanks again.

Why on earth would you bottle feed the pups when Mum has milk, and try to dry her up???

For Eclampsia she can have Calcium and vitamin D supplements like Calo Cal D for the nursing period.

Put the pups with Mum.  I hope they have had their first milk from her as otherwise things look bleak for their survival, as the colostrum is vital to provide immunity.

Unfortunately few vets are themselves breeders and some have very little knowledge of the practicalities of puppy rearing, their expertise runs with how to get them out and treat disease.

What has your mentor (usually the mothers breeder or often the stud dog owner if they breed) advised

Hi been advised by our vet to take the pups away from mum. The pups are 3 weeks old now and are doing really good bit thanks for your advise. The mum has been far too ill to feed the pups.

This is so sad this has happened .I do hope she is ok and that others will read your experience and it will help.them think twice about breeding .It's not for the fainthearted.
Any advice brainless gives will be very sound. I would advise asking her any questions you may  have as she has many years of successful breeding behind her and unless.the vet is also a breeder will have more knowledge in this area
