Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Help! Surrogate needed in Gloucestershire
- By heather Glos [gb] Date 11.03.17 20:45 UTC
My bitch had an emergency c section nearly 2 weeks ago, her milk flow had been off and on. The pups refuses milk from the bottles. We are exhausted.
She is getting plenty of fluids and food and the vet has her on supplements but non of it is working.

Any suggestions???

It would help if people had your location?

We are In Gloucestershire..

We may have found a surrogate but not sure how it all works.

My bitch produced little milk last night which is great but she just isn't producing the amount required

Can I ask whether the puppies are okay, not crying, and gaining daily.   Fact is at first, puppies don't NEED lashings of milk and to take them off mum, or supplement, may well mean she doesn't lactate as she should be to provide for her puppies.  We have had perhaps more than our fair share of C.Sections over the years and without exception, we've not had to supplement because they didn't have enough for the puppies - even with a litter of 9 which was Sectioned.   Suckling stimulates lactation.   How many puppies is she having to cater for?    If they are content, it may well be that even if you think she's not producing enough milk for them, she is!!   They may be draining her at each feed.

Try the orphaned pups UK on fb they may be able to go and give advice on how to deal with the surrogate mum

I would have thought if you have got the puppies to 2 weeks old then you could start to supplement them with some solids. I have in the past started weaning early with a large litter and by 2 weeks most will take a small ball of fine minced beef with no problem, however that does depend on the size of the breed. If Mum is washing and looking after her babies then it would be a little cruel to take them away from her.  Better to start feeding yourself with solids than to send them off to a surrogate and if Mum has bonded she will not be happy for you to bring a bitch in and take her pups away.

She will only produce milk if you allow the puppies to suckle, put them on to her when they are hungry, you can always top them up afterwards

Heather I'm with MamaBas on this one.  I have a breed known for sections, and I've been surprised sometimes that pups are actually doing well.  Read MamaBas' post again - she's right you know.

This was the case with my Lexi and her first litter.  She never bagged up and looked like a bitch feeding a litter, she just seemed to produce what was needed at time of feeding and never had full boobs.

Her 7 pups gained well.

Ditto, where weight gain seemed slow I have started pups on sloppy weaning foods as soon as eyes open.
