i am posting this with trepidation as i have seen some of the messages about this bred! the problem i have is that my 8 year old son is desperate for a puppy but both him and i have pet hair allergies and i thought that after giving up hope of ever being to have a dog we had found the answer. unfortunately i am not having a lot of luck finding out where we can purchase one from. i understand other peoples reservations about x-breeding but have not heard of any other breed which we could own. does anybody know of anywhere i can get a labradoodle or suggest any other breed which we could look at owning. with thanks

Hi guest, how about a Poodle?
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 22.02.03 20:00 UTC
Hi Guest :) As you have said that you've already read some of the threads on the subject , I won't suggest you use the search button and look for them :)

The Labradoodle is not a recognised breed in the UK. If you and your son have allergy problems I am sure some of the regulars will suggest alternatives.

You could always Register with us and join in with the chat :)

since this is a cross breed and one of the parents is from a moulting breed some Labradoodles will moult.
Why not go for a non moulting pedigree such as a poodle or a schnauzer(sp???).Yuo will then have the benefits(if you buy from a reputable breeder) of health checked parents and support and advice .

Welcome to the board :-) I thought standard poodles were about the same size as labs only slimmer
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 22.02.03 20:21 UTC
Poodles do come in 3 sizes ..the largest of which are VERY large indeed ;)

As Archer has said, there is no guarantee that a Labrador X Poodle will hold true to the Poodle and by the time you find out it will be too late! The only option then will be to hand the puppy back or it's another for Dog Rescue. As you have read the past threads you will know of my opposition to the breeding of crosses but I’m really not trying to be nasty to you. Much as I am sorry for you I really don’t feel this is the answer and that you really could be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

Regards, John

How about a curly coated retriever.

All the standard poodles I have known have lovely natures, don't forget they were originally a gundog.

Or as someone else suggested a schnauzer they come in Giant as well, so that answers your requirements for a large dog.

I've kown a standard poodle and a giant schnauzer-both had super tempraments.

How about the mexican hairless? Beautiful breed IMO

There's Spanish Water Dogs and Lagotto's. I don't know about Lagotto's but unfortunately (if you want one that is) there's a longish waiting list for Spanish Water Dogs.

Don't really know the character with children of the Lagotto.

Where do you live?? You could always try going to Crufts and seeing if there are any suitable breeds there that are non shedding etc.

Hi,
There are a few breeds that are suposed to be good if you have allergies, although, you do need to make sure about what EXACTLY you are allergic too, it could be the hair, it could be the dander; dead skin etc, or it could be the traces of saliva on the dogs coat from it licking itself.
If you are only allergic to the fur, then a 'hairy' breed, rather than a furry breed might suit you better. These dogs dont tend to shed like other dogs, if correctly groomed. Also, in general, (but not in every case) dogs with longer silky hair, and dogs with wire coats that need stripping are easy for people with allergies.
so, if you dont want a small dog, i guess the Bolognese is out, as well as the Miniature Schnauzer, and the Maltese.
How about, Standard or Giant Schnauzer (though the giant really is very big,), Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, as previously mentioned the standard poodle.
The benefits of these KC recognised breeds, is that they breed true to type, which a cross breed such as teh Labradoodle (and likewise the 'Sprollie' and the 'Cockerpoo' etc etc) dont, so whilst the adult one you meet at a breeders, or in the park might not set off your allergies, your own pup might do.
When you have found breeds you like, see if you can find some one who owns, or breeds these dogs, and see if they will let you and your son come to their house for a few hours, to see if there is an allergic reaction to the dogs.

thanks everybody for the help. am now looking up all the suggested breeds on the net. bec was right coz we did have a poodle. sadly no longer. we live in bedfordshire but are moving to norfolk in the summer and dont want to disrupt a nwe pup with a move so will wait till we get there before getting one. by the way it is the hair that is the problem for us both.

Irish Water Spaniles are considered the clown of the Gundog breeds. They aren't too big, and should be a fun companion for afamily with an active lad to be with.

They do love water though :D

Hi,
You can get advice about Mexican Hairless from "Mrs Rachel" on 01773 716743. (She puts her number in dog magazines so I guess it's okay to post it on the board.) They had a breed stand at Discover Dogs last year, so I expect they'll be there again this time too.
- By crazicrest [gb] Date 25.02.03 09:18 UTC
Mrs Rachel is the only breeder of them in the country at the moment. I think she has difficulty finding good homes for them after speaking to her at Crufts last year. I too am thinking of getting one. I know from the litter she had last year she gave 3 or 4 to be used as Hearing dogs.
