Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Heavy bleeding during ovulation

Hi, I was looking for anyone that may have experienced similar. I have bread 2 breeds for some time but have never seen this before. 2 yr old girl, who starts her season light but then becomes very heavy from the second wk and bleeds for 4. On her last season she was seen by vet and nothing was found to be wrong. I was going to breed her on this one and the same thing is happening. She was tested last tue and was 5.7, wed she changed a nice straw colour and then from Thursday has bled really heavy again, was tested yesterday and was 19.1 so ovulation has occurred, with recommendation to breed today and tomorrow. My concern is if she is likely to flush out any seman with the heavy loss, and could the loss be connected with ovulation?
Would be interested in any views.

I had my Lexi do this on one season,  told nothing was wrong,  mated on next but one for her last litter,  all the seasons from then were as you describe.

I had her spayed during a C section,  after first pup delivered, as she got wildly distressed after two hours with no subsequent delivery of the rest.

I have put her out to stud, see what happens. I don't hold much hope. This is her 4th season and all been the same, it's the norm for her. Iv not experienced a girl like this before it seams to be as she hits ovulation a dam breaks.

If she were mine, I'd spay.   Okay mate her the one time if you feel you must but to be losing like that, and for that long can't be doing her much good I'd suggest.   All, bar one, of mine would 'conform', blood coloured loss through the first week, going to a pale straw colour and then either some increased slightly more coloured discharge to the end (21 days) or not much discharge at all.   I had one however, who bled as usual, was mated twice, and then in the third week returned to a more significantly coloured discharge through the final week to the point I felt she'd never have taken.   She had an uneventful pregnancy, and 9 puppies at the end.  I only took the one litter from her - she gave me 3 worth keeping after all!

I'd not want one having a discharge for 4 weeks but they are all different.   How often does she come in?

In 45+ years I have never, ever seen "straw coloured" and I've always thought, when reading this description in books, that it couldn't be more misleading for novices.  I had a bitch exactly the same as you describe, mated on day 28 and a successful litter delivered.

Most of my bitches have bled throughout a normal season, and still bleeding when mated, totally normal litters and pregnancies.

She comes in 6 months like clock work, is not put out by blood loss. Becomes agitated days before heat as in wont tolerate my other girl. Once in, is a joy, and turns nasty again for few days when ovulating. Same as any other girl I have, I'm not a big believer in colour change as Iv had many that don't, it's just the amount she seems to bleed once ovulation occures. She is fully health tested and the most laid back nature, but I will consider a spay dependent on outcome of this mating.

I've not had many bitches, most were already spayed, and I've never bred - just so you know my experience, or lack of.
The one experience I have had, in my entire Elkie, is that she had long bleeding seasons. I took her to be spayed at 8 years old when they found multiple ovarian tumours.  I must emphasise that this is extremely rare, but I would also advise a scan.
