Hi, thinking of getting a beagle puppy and was wondering some of the pro and cons from people who have them. Differences between males and females? We have a 1 1/2 year old chocolate lab who really loves other dogs, and it would be nice if he had some companionship. Also, we would have the benefits of having another dog! Any info appreciated.

My husband used to have a beagle many years ago, who was like almost all the others I've ever heard of - they are hounds, who, once on a scent, are deaf to any command! I know of one in my area - and he cannot be let off the lead, because he won't come back till he's good and ready. Although I think they are totally beautiful, from what I've learnt, they are not for the faint-hearted! :)

Couldn't agree more Jeangenie. We own one beagle. In short beagles can be noisy, destructive and deaf. On the plus side loving, beautiful and intelligent. On the other hand the intelligence is also a negative you wouldn't believe what our gets up to. She can open cupboards in the kitchen and has been known to empty the pedigree chum tin before it'd been opened because beagles do love their food. :) I've posted on this subject a couple of times recently. You would need to keep a beagle very active to avoid noise and destruction problems.

One thought though. Most people have heard of beagles and think they are quite attractive so why aren't they that popular?

Keep researching and hope you make the right decision for you.
